emccallum Posted October 19, 2022 Share #1  Posted October 19, 2022 I am having an issue with one of my front struts. The caliper is scraping the rotor. I am thinking the hub came off of a 280 and the strut assembly is a 240. Does anyone know if there is a difference between a 240 front hub and a 280 hub? Everything has been rebuilt and I have doubled checked the bearing races to make sure they are fully seated. It seems the hub needs to seat a little more on the spindle to allow the rotor to center in the caliper. Just wondering if anyone has come across this issue. Zed Head Posted October 19, 2022 Share #2  Posted October 19, 2022 When you say rotor do you mean hub? It's attached to the disc but many people think of the rotor as the disc itself. You can buy things called "rotors" that have no hub attached. Just a brake disc that fits over wheel studs. I don't know how they ended up being called rotors. A picture would be good, even one from the FSM. I know that they early 240Z hubs are different from later hubs. Scalloped versus round if I remember right. Not sure about dimensions or caliper fitment. zKars Posted October 19, 2022 Share #3  Posted October 19, 2022 (edited) 240 hubs have 4 scallops on the front and 280 rotors have a completely smooth round shape. They take completely different rotors as well that have a very different offset. That said, the correct hub and rotor combo for either will put the disk at the same position since they both use the same caliper. You could have a 240 set on one side and a 280 set on the other and be just fine. You just can’t mix hubs and rotors. More likely you need to retract the pistons in the caliper all the way and then re-install. It will self center. One side went together just fine, so something is different here. Both rotors are new, and measure the same. I have spare parts, so I am going to swap things around and see if I can come up with the answer. Originally the car had a 280 front strut. I sourced a 240 strut (based on the orientation of the brake line tab). So, its possible something is bent or wrong with the strut assembly. Lots of variables that need to be sorted out! emccallum Posted October 19, 2022 Author Share #5  Posted October 19, 2022 (edited) Got it fixed. Sometimes you need to just walk away for a while. Removed the hub to recheck the races. Then noticed the hub had a piece of the dust shield bent under it, keeping it from seating all the way. That made perfect sense because I had to loosen the hub nut more than the 60 degrees that the manual states to get the hub to turn free.
