I agree Mr C I see too many MG's on the road there so little and ugly can't stand them. The roadster might not be amazing in looks but I like em' look at Victor Laury's photo album love that roadster.

I think that there is a certain grudge against the Z for being a Japanese sports car and not a British built unreliable heap of crap.

Don't get me wrong I don't hate those cars I just think the Z is so underated even the guy who sold me the 240z I own said the same thing with a sigh.

He was happy to see someone such as myself take ownership he knew I was an enthusiast.

There so versatile and beautiful it's a wonder there not worth more.

Someday with the efforts of people like Rick me and the rest of us the car will become a true legend.

If anything the 350z is helping people remember.

BTW the new Unique Cars will have a huge feature on the Z i hear.

Cheers.:classic:

Hahaha. I've just finished reading all this talk about MGB's etc and how they compare to zeds. What makes it truly interesting for me is that whilst I have a 240 my father owns an immaculate MGB GT which is great fun to drive. I am not an MG snob, but some of the claims above are a little silly...

What people have to remember is that the 240 came out 10 YEARS after the MGB. Whilst the magazines of the day comment about how they compare, it's like putting a 280zx against an N32 300zx. Hello? I'd say that there'd be a greater difference there!

The real thing that killed off MG and all the other British car companies was the lack of reliability in the cars and the politics of the homologisation of the British car industry that stifled any real inventiveness. The MGC, a car that should have been as good as the zed, wasn't because of the politics surrounding which 6 cylinder engine to use. As history has shown, it was a real error of judgement.

Comparing the two cars to drive is an interesting task, and whilst the zed is quicker, there is no doubt in my mind that the "feel" through the MG gearbox is far superior. In fact, apparently Mazda tried to copy the feel and the sound in their early MX5's.

One has to remember that whilst it is easy to label MG people "snobs", chances are they have been supporting a classic car movement since the birth of the zed itself. There is some snobbery to get around, however I feel that truly open minded people are learning about the importance of the 240. Snobs are everywhere, even in zed land...

The zed will always have one problem, however, the fact that it was never a convertible. If it came out as such, I feel that the following would be quite different today. Still, I couldn't give a rats ars coz I'm a VERY happy owner!!

I do have one gripe tho... the constant belief that the zed was the highest selling sports car of all time. If the MX5 hasn't already passed it, I feel that this statement is pretty ludicrous. It is clear that the 240, N32 and 350z are completely different cars and feel that whilst they do have a 'z' after a numerical series, this claim is rather poorly supported. The MGB, however ran fairly much unchanged for nearly 25 years or so.

So come on guys, love your fellow classic car owner!!

You mean the first 240Z came out 10 after than first MGB. New MGBs were rolling off the production line when the 240Zs appeared so the comparison is valid. Its no fault of Datsun that MG made no major technological revision to the MGB during its produciton life. In fact, I understand that when the MGB first went into production its engine and drivline were already dated, having seen service in the MGA which dated to the 1950s.

That is true. Can you believe people were even buying them into the 80's? Sheesh! Then again, until the recent models people were buying Falcons and Commodores with 50's technology...ROFL

Hey there Alfa,

Thought you might be interested to know that;

In the early 1970's, Datsun 240Z's participated in some of the toughest rallys in the world.

The East Africa Safari.

1971

Overall victory, Class victory, Team victory and Manufacturers championship.

Zeds also placed overall second and seventh.

1972

Overall fifth, sixth and tenth.

1973

Overall first, second and fourth.

The Monti Carlo Rally

1971

Second in it's class, Overall fifth and tenth.

1972

Overall third.

1973

Overall ninth.

Australia's Southern Cross Rally.

1972

First in it's class and second overall.

I reckon that's a bloody impressive success story, especially for a "Cheapy".

One other point;

I have an original brochure for my 260 in which it states that "The Datsun 240Z became the world's top selling sports car in just three short years by proving itself in the two ultimate test arenas--- the track and the showroom".

No wonder we love our Zeds, be they 240's, 260's or 280's.

Rick.

Thanks Gavin!

If you're ever over here, You get to drive her up the Angeles Crest Highway. I don't know if I'll be chasing or leading in the Z, as that Roadster Beast is pretty dam fast out the the Twisties!:D

MG enthusiast love to call the roadster an MG copy, even thought Datsun beat MG on the rollout by a couple of months.

The 1500 and 1600 roadster competed in the same class as the MG to for a GLORIOUS career. Right now, as you read this, on a race track, somewhere in the world, a Datsun Roadster 1600 is total disrespecting a MGB, even with it's 1800cc engine!

The 2000 Roadster's main track rival was the Triump GT-6. Poor ole Triumph wanted the SCCA Championship badly to promote their sales. It was not to be, as the 4 banger roadster beat it out 2 years straight. (half the Triump racing Team ended up driving Datsuns before the 70's were through)

The #1 reason why I'm a Datsun Fanatic today was the beautifull racing history enjoyed by Datsuns, both by big money teams and the grassroots privateer. In 1979 I was at Road Atlanta for a SCCA National and watched Bob Devendorf in an ElectroMotive B210 take H production(?), with low buget 1970 1200 privateer an .8 of second behind him, and the rest of the field a quarter of a lap back. I thought to myself, "Those Datsuns must be pretty good cars".
