Good afternoon guys, 

 

im looking for a little help on my 72 240 l24. So in the mornings first time starting it takes awhile for it to crank and start up. sometimes i’ll have to let it crank for quite some time then let off then try again with my foot on gas and it’ll start up. once the car is warmed up i can shut it off and start it right back up like 30min later. it has newer plugs ,wires  and distributor cap. There’s fuel in the fuel filter every time in my engine bay, it has an electric fuel pump as well. Another issue is that sometimes i have to turn my key over multiple times for it to actually register and try to crank. i’m guessing that is ignition switch needing replaced or cleaned up. Anybody have an idea on what it could potentially be?

Are you using the choke and are the choke cables pulling the nozzles down?

ya i tried pulling the choke back and crank it . before it seemed to pulled the nozzles down but now ill have to double check. might sound dumb but if i pull the choke cable should the nozzles be noticeably down like i could press them back up and feel it with my finger when doing so 

 I don't remember how far the nozzles drop at full choke but you should be able to tell the difference between no choke and full choke with a finger.

maybe cables not pulling it down all the way. i took them off when i cleaned the carbs up and reattached them. there were little grooves wore in the plastic covering where they fit in the little bracket so i assumed it’d go right back in there like that

Yes they move noticeably. Maybe a ¼" or more at full choke

ill double check this for sure . maybe not pulling nozzles down all the way

so i don’t think it’s pulling them down as much as it should if any. is it likely the choke cable itself is bad ?

The place were the outer lining of the cable is connected is maybe lose at the choke-knob in your mid-console?

Does not matter if you give full throttle, only in our minds it helps haha.. i often doe it myself at cold start.. Just pull the choke completely when very cold weather..

ill check the cable by the consoles as well

You can unhook the choke cables at the carb and move the levers manually to check function. Also make sure they dont stick down. I have seen many do that. Once you check functionality then I would inspect the choke cable. Jacket could be broken,  a cable could be snapped or it could be broken away from the console

I bought one that was hard to start cold. After pulling them off I saw that the PO had used stiff fuel line from the nozzles to the float chambers. The nozzles wouldn't go all the way down with that hose on there the way the cables were adjusted. My dumb arse got the cables super tight and forced them down. That lasted about 2 days and the choke lever assembly broke off the console. 

I bought some of the right type hose that came in a kit on e-bay for like $20 bucks, before I learned of ztherapy.com. Also found one of the best home garage design 240 part that's out there. A better than OE bracket for the choke lever made by Art Singer.

Also need to add something recent that was causing hard start up after sitting awhile. My float chamber lids were loose enough that the fuel was evaporating out of the chambers/bowls. Tightened those 4 screws up and now it hits right off the bat. Little things can turn into huge things I've learned.
