What is this knob for?

On this pic, what is this knob for? Car is a 280z.

Also, does anyone have a picture of the brackets that the under dash cover bolt to? I bought my car in pieces and never saw it all together.

That's not my car, but I agree it looks great. Thanks for the info on the fresh air vent, that makes me have a bunch more questions.
