Hey guys, say hi to Sven (read: Phillip) from Sweden. He was holidaying in Sydney and we met up. He's a really nice guy, inot photography and filming stuff and really into cars as well.

He wants to buy a 240 but they are very very hard to find in Sweden and the import taxes are a bit high from the US so he's looking for something from within Europe. Can anyone help him?

Good thinking, Sven. Brilliant idea, buy a 240z.

But I would recommend you to find a sound car in California, if possible with minimal rust. Take your time, search ebay, search US forums like this. When you got a candidate, contact the seller, ask other forum members for advice. No rush.

For transporting, there is a company, California Shipping (http://www.calship.com). They can ship to Scandinavian ports for really good prices. And, BTW, it is owned and run by Swedes!

I used them to transport mine 240z from LA to Oslo for just $895 - car came in a container, secured in a very professional manner. No problems at all.

Transport within US borders can be more expensive, I guess (correct me, US guys).

Import tax is another story. Here in Norway, cars older then 30 years are taxed very low (we refer to such car as "veteran bil") - this is what is called in English: historic vehicle, tax exempt. Check rules in Sweden - could be very similar. First registration date can be important, at least in Norway it counts as car's "birthday". If you are unable to document it, then 1st of January of next year after production year is used - so, to be on safe side, buy 1972 model (no "flattops" will be another advantage.

In continental Europe 240Z's are very rare. I sometimes check German site: http://www.mobile.de - they may have up to 500.000 ads, but none of them for 240Z. Unbelivable to US citizens, I think. And yet another reason to have one - it's gonna be a real head turner here.

Hi to Sven ( mull ) and welcome,

We don't have all that many cars over here in the UK, but we have quite a lot of useful parts that are left over from dead cars ( ! ). That may be useful for you in the future.

Actually there ARE some good cars over here, but you do not see them advertised for sale very often. Many of them change ownership without even being advertised.

And of course, many of our cars here are RHD. That may be something that would be inconvenient for you in a country full of LHD cars.

One thing to bear in mind is that 5-speed transmissions and 3.9 ratio diffs are still very plentiful over here - so if you do get an American car that has not been converted, you know where to look.

I'll e-mail you with some information on cars for sale here, just out of interest. Maybe importing a car already in the EC would save you quite a lot of money?

This makes sense since the main labor is loading the car in a shipping container and hauling it to a dock. A car in LA doesn't have far to go to get to a port like Long Beach. Transporting a car within the US would generally involve paying someone to drive a transport vehicle and probably include the cost of their return trip.
