Posted April 1, 20231 yr comment_652010 I've never seen it but what z or zx has this on the rear of the starter? Maybe on a 280z as i never owned that type.. but what's the function of this rubber grommet on the end of this starter? I can't think of anything.. under that rear part are the brushes and the collector.. Thanks ! April 1, 20231 yr comment_652011 That's to drain off the extra electrons so they don't fill up the starter. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/68241-starter-with-some-extra-inoutlet-what-is-this/#findComment-652011 Share on other sites

April 1, 20231 yr comment_652015 In all seriousness, I would assume it's an air vent to let the ozone out? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/68241-starter-with-some-extra-inoutlet-what-is-this/#findComment-652015 Share on other sites

The electrical arcing in the motor brushes creates ozone. Here's a snippet from wikipedia >> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone Incidental production: Ozone may be formed from O2 by electrical discharges. Unsuppressed arcing in electrical contacts, motor brushes, or mechanical switches breaks down the chemical bonds of the atmospheric oxygen surrounding the contacts. Certain electrical equipment generate significant levels of ozone. This is especially true of devices using high voltages, such as ionic air purifiers, laser printers, photocopiers, tasers and arc welders. Electric motors using brushes can generate ozone from repeated sparking inside the unit.
