Servicing Cooling System Questions

Recommended Posts

Played with the eFan. No way it's gonna work. I can't get clearance no matter what. I don't want to use an aftermarket eFan, they just don't have the pull of the Bosch units.

So, I trimmed the Volvo (Aisin) fan to fit the Nissan clutch

I trimmed the top half of a Volvo standard shroud to fit, I don't like the fan blade exposed. Riveted brackets to either side of the rad vertical plates to retain it ( I used 3M Velcro to hold it while I figure those out)

While I was in there, I fixed the distributor vacuum line/tee connection to the TB and charcoal cannister

The distributor wiring had been nicked at some point by the fan, so I re-routed that, and added a sealed 2 pole timer connection where the wire was damaged (no pic)

Rewired the AFM also - blurry pic. The heat sheath below is on the dist wiring - since it is now closer to the manifold.

Look at this thread for some ideas: https://forums.hybridz.org/topic/108060-electric-fans/

Thanks for the link, Steve. Unfortunately, beyond mentioning that the Ford Taurus fan/shroud can/should work, there aren't any specifics (Edit - note that in the video he is using the same Volvo fan in place of the Taurus unit).  Not interested in generic/aftermarket solutions, they are always a disappointment. I've tried a range over the years on my X1/9 where eFan cooling is critical.

Cleaned up around the crank, and removed the pulley & old seal. Definitely well hardened. There is a decent wear groove on the pulley seal neck, so I made sure to alter the seal depth for the new one

Repair sleeves are available to for worn seal surfaces. Any bearing supply house or or auto parts supply should have them.

  • 3 weeks later...

5/8 Stainless pipe for the heat pipe along the block, & bead roller tool arrived, along with the bulkhead fitting I'm going to use

5/8" hose barb to 10AN bay side fittings

As an aside, I had to remove the belly pan to do this work, and decided to repair the torn ear & reinforce the other 8

And since I can do pics again, here's my solution to the bulkhead feedthru. Not as glamorous as what you did, but more stock-ish. I made a stainless version of the original feedthru. Used the bead roller for this too.

New stainless version with old crusty original in background:

Yeah, that tool looks great. Probably much more durable than what I cobbled together. I didn't heat treat my dies and I'm not sure how many shots I'm going to get out of them before they start showing damage. Let's just hope I don't need to do a lot of bead rolling.   :excl:

I tested the bead roller yesterday. I wish I had room for a lathe, there is certainly many an item I could use one for. In any event, this tool works very nicely

So inquiring minds want to know make and model of the bead roller...

Graham Tool Co - Medium Tube Beading Tool

Not cheap by any stretch, however I'll need to do a fair amount of tube bead rolling on the V8-into-Volvo-Pickup that I have underway
