Patcon Posted August 16, 2023 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2023 So I know there were a number of areas that the factory applied black paint to improve the look or finish. Where are all of these areas? What is the extent of the application? What finish was the paint? Flat, semi or gloss? These are some of the areas that I can remember Some of this area behind the qtr glass Some portion of this edge on the window Behind the speaker holes Some portion of the front radiator support I also believe there was some down near the foot well or the kick panel??
jfa.series1 Posted August 16, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2023 Here are some pics from my project, just a few VINs younger than Lily. No blackout around the quarter windows as the weather strip seal will cover everything. Blackout on the interior B-pillar at the leading edge of the dogleg panel: Blackout along the A-pillar and frame rail at the kick panel edges: Blackout on the front of the radiator support and the five mounting points for the grill: Also the seat mounting brackets: No blackout behind the speaker holes in the rear interior panel. Hope this helps. 2

Matthew Abate Posted August 20, 2023 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2023 @jfa.series1 Any specific paint recommendations? I have single-stage paint in all of those areas so I am hoping I can use something in a rattle can and be done with it.

Hey Matt, The OE paint was pretty cheap and slapped on with a brush, probably a cross between flat and satin. I would recommend satin as flat will hold dust and dirt. I used gloss on my radiator support just to make it easier to wipe down.

Patcon Posted August 24, 2023 Author Share #8 Posted August 24, 2023 I was looking at some of my spare quarter windows. I'm still not sure this wasn't painted black It scratches off, like a coating
Matthew Abate Posted August 24, 2023 Share #9 Posted August 24, 2023 Mine is black. I stripped them and repainted them before putting new seals on. 1
87mj Posted August 29, 2023 Share #10 Posted August 29, 2023 Some of the areas painted depended on the year of the car. I have a 5/71 with the seat brackets painted with spray paint. I also have a later 71 painted with spray paint. Each of the 4 areas with seat mounting holes were painted. I have a 6/70 with only 3 of the 4 brackets painted. On that car, they used a brush. Curiously also on the 6/70, they painted the floor behind the seat where the tool box is mounted. But just on the driver side. Every indication was it was factory paint on the inside of the car. I skipped painting that section on my restore. I assumed my car was used to train in a new guy. 🙂
