That's a great idea. I've broken one when I was younger and it was an ordeal from what I remember.

Just out of curiosity, how do you end up getting the hood up with a broken cable?

The pull cord releases the latch that locks the hood down. Normally done with the t handle in the cab from what I understand.

My '72 has been replaced already by the PO.

IIRC, it requires reaching up from underneath the car with exactly the right long-reach/thin/inflexible tool capable of snagging the release lever and budging it enough to pop the hood.  Others, I'm sure, will be able to offer more details.

That about covers it but it will take a couple days and lots of skinned knuckles before you find the right combination of tools, patience and luck.
