Motorsport cam failure?!

Has any one had any issues with the cams sold by Motorsport? I have recently bought one and it has been nothing but hell. First, it took over four months to get here. The people that grinds them forgot to drill and tap the sproket bolt hole in the front of the cam and now the piece of $^!# went flat on me. Not the whole thing, but the first 3 lobes. I know the thing was getting oil and it was in adjustment. I installed it my self, with help from my boss who is a Nissan master tech so I know it was done right. I'm hoping to get my money back and go somewhere elese so if anyone has a good reliable sourse, please let me know. I am frothing at the mouth in angher right now and probably need to run around the block before I do somthing I regret.

ScaryFast,

I would be interested to know if the cam has a CWC embossed in the shaft between the lobes. I have seen a number of these cams loose lobes. From what I understand, the CWC is the company which produces the raw cam blank. I have seen different cam grinders use this cam blank with the same results. When I have a cam ground, I use an original Datsun cam as a core, and request the cam grinder to grind and return this particular cam, and not put it on the shelf as a core and return another non Datsun cam. I also use only OEM new rockers as I have wiped out lobes on the dyno using aftermarket rockers. As a non-scientific test I hardness tested both the lobes and the rockers. I found the hardness of the cam/rocker combinations varied considerably. The "bad" cam/rocker combo had hardness that was seperated by only a few points on the (standard)Rockwell C scale. But the Datsun cam/rocker combo had a greater difference in the hardness of the two pieces. It seems that if the two pieces are too similar in hardness, they "fight" each other, and gall. The dissimilar hardness of the Datsun parts seem to allow the two parts to work together without galling. I am a racing engine builder/machinist, not a metalergy expert. But this has been my experiance with wiped out lobes on Datsuns, and how I minimize the risk when building a new engine. Also, know you are not alone, many others have had this same problem. Good luck.

ScaryFast,

If you bought both cam and rockers from MSA, you should have a good case for return/replacement.

FWIW, I've also had 2 liter Ford CWC cams fail. They have a similar cam/rocker layout as Datsun.

I did buy the whole kit so the guarantee stands. They have gotten back to me already and seem to be cooperative so far, so I hope I dont have any issues getting compensated. The main thing I am worried about is where did all that metal go? Just my luck it is collecting in a mainbearing or something that will end up causing something very serious to happen when I am the farthest away from home.

I recently ordered a cam from MSA also, well I can't say recently since I've been waiting for 3 months. They said they had a problem with them not having the sprocket hole in them. I did order the whole kit from them. They also suggested I remove the cam spray tube and block off the holes since it's an internally oiled cam. Do you guys know if the cam is guaranteed for life? I'm building an engine and until I get my car done I probably won't run it for a while.

Phred, do you have any specs for heads? I'm putting new intake seats in a N42 and my machine shop can't find specs. Mainly the valve stem height.

as well. where the hell did all that metal go:cross-eye

id ask them about this problem and if they would gaurentee against my engine failing and or give me something to compensate failure due to the loss of theyre cam metallic substance running threw my engine.

talk to them about it and see what they say. id be interested to hear how this all turns out.
