Engine Compartment Splash Pan

I ran across this on e-bay for $136 w/ shipping and was wondering if its worth picking up to aid in keeping the engine compartment cool. I have an early 260z but I suspect this design for the 280z matches. If I sand it down and if it fits in the powder coat oven, I think I can make it look nice for the cones I drive over in Autocross.

That's cheap for that one. Get it! I paid more 20 years ago.  Get it powder coated.

I don't think that's true. You know that the early 260Z (like mine) has a 240Z radiator core support. The late 260 and the 280 changed the lower support downward in a sort of deeper "U" fashion. Since the "belly pan" attaches to both the frame rails and the bottom of the core support, there has to be a difference in design for the pan. A quick look at the parts list on carpartsmanual.com shows "splash-board engine" with one part number (74810-E4100) TO 08/74 and a different part number (74810-E4200) FROM 09/74. 

The same part number for the early 260Z shows up for all 240Z's which I would expect.

I'll look at the three that I have and see which part they are. If I have one of each, I'll post a pic with the physical difference.

The only difference that was apparent to me from the photographs was that the later version had a large hole, presumably to reach the radiator drain ****. 

It would be really helpful to see the difference and to know if they are similar enough so I can get away with the 280z version.

Hi, 

Yours is for the later ‘U shaped’ lower cross members which can be seen on 280Z and Fairlady Z(S31 model).

Just FYI, I recently refurbished my pan for my Z which is the earliest style, no-hole version (late 1969 to late 1972 in Japan).

The big question is can I, through minor modifications, make the splash pan fit?

I have a love/hate relationship with those splash pans 😫 

Too many episodes of dropping a screw or washer, hearing it hit the pan and then vanishing into oblivion.

That's a reasonable price; get it.  I think you will find that it fits on your car.

The three that I have are all the early design part (guess that makes sense). Like the pic kats posted - no holes. I don't have the later part to make a comparison with so I can't comment on if the late 260/280 part could be made to fit the earlier Z's.

(But since the "splash-board engine" fastens to the lower core support which changed shape starting with the late 260 AND the radiator also changed size and shape, you'd have to assume the "splash-board engine" requiring a different shape as well. Knowing Nissan, I would also assume that most of the mounting points would remain the same on the frame and cross member.)

I just looked at my car and compared the grill radiator assembly with those sown on Carpartsmanual.com and my car definitely has the early version. I wonder if the holes in the later splash-board were added to address loosing screws and washers while working under the hood?

I might cancel that order as it hasn't shipped yet and wait out a splash-board that will fit without modification.
