Poor fit of OEM air filter

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else seen that their air filter housing does not seat fully against the seal even with an OEM air filter installed?

I painstakingly refurbished the air cleaner housing.  I re-used the rubber seals inside.  The only replacement seal is the one that goes all the way around the periphery that is not making contact with the cover in the photos above.  That seal came from Banzai.

There is a gap of about 1/8" there - the outside periphery of the air cleaner cover is not touching the seal.  The seals on the inside of the air filter back plate and cover are bottoming out on each side of the air filter.  Is the factory air filter a bit thicker than the original?

I never seen that! I think your filter is to thick. For as far i know there is only one thickness filter for the 240z, a 280zx has 2 very different filter thicknesses.. and they look a bit like 240z filters. your sure you have the right 240z filter, can someone give the thickness in mm? (Yeah i know stupid question, asking you if you got the right one.. :tapemouth: )

I have a new in the box Nissan 16546-E3210 shipped on 04-09, it is 59.2 mm thick.  It fits in the box I got online with all gaskets and have with no gap like yours.  Hope this helps.

Also interesting is you look to have purchased your filter from Zcardepot. with the 800-627 sticker on the end.

They list that one and a 800-985 as both the same fitment and sizes listed, but the price is different.

Makes me wonder if they mixed up some stock at some point.

Where do you see 800-627 on the end?

Oh.  I see the 800-627 on the end now.  Interesting.  I thought I purchased this from a Nissan dealer.  However, the Nissan part number on the box is correct for up to 06/1972.

The filter I have is 2.355" thick as measured with calipers in several places.  That is 59.8 mm thick.  So, do I have the wrong filter housing?

It looks like you have the correct air box for a 72. Most assuredly not the 73 box.

I bought some 3 screw '72 carbs at a swap meet and they came with a factory air filter. It only has a "04810" and the hamburger on it. It looks like the 800-627

The one I have measures at 1 15/16" ish

I see the difference in the ZCD ones now, The 800-985 is aftermarket, and the 800-627 is Nissan.

Does your filter have the OEM stamps on it like the bottom one in my ^^ post above? I don't see them in your pic's.

Here are the markings on my air filter element - there is one of these stamps on each side, and the U8308 is only on one side of the element:
