(I remember i once sended someone his own carpart pictures when he asked for some pic's of parts of 240z's ! 🙈 ... sometimes you have them all mixed up and way to many pictures made..)

Possibly... but I don't see any evidence yet that there was a difference in the back plates from inception until 6/1972.  However...

I also only see one part number for the cover, and we know there were different versions of that from inception, but before the 73 models:

  

 

So, perhaps there are differences in the back plates also (before the 73 models).

 

 

Well after my botched measurement earlier on, hopefully I can regain some credibility.

One extra bracket on the back of the flat plate. 

 

Lids look like they close well, orange has a filter, Purp does not.

 

 

Insides are similar, shaved ventures, different seals

 

They both look flat to me. 

 

 

The filter holder went from 4 outside the filter spring clips to the inside the filter blockers

 

Excellent!  However, I do believe your orange back plate should be paired with your purple cover.  And purple backplate with your orange cover.

You are correct sir, choke cable bracket. 

This is a great discussion. I went out and had a closer look at my #957 car and found that it has the early air cleaner cover paired with the later backing plate with the choke cable bracket. There is always something new to learn.

This got me wondering about what was on my #6521 that is undergoing restoration. I pulled that air cleaner assembly out from my crawl space, and learned that it has fewer return air connection points. It was news to me but makes sense as #6521 is a Canadian market non-emissions car, that did not come with an air pump. I looked in the JDM parts book and it is the same as JDM assembly part number 16500-E4301 as shown below.

Here are a couple of the pictures that @Terrapin Z posted above, edited to add my early non-emissions air cleaner for comparison. My learning continues.

Actually, the earlier back plate is the one with the choke cable bracket.  So, the car your recently bought has the correct back plate and housing.

I still think the replacement seal (#1 in your parts book picture) I bought from Banzai may be thinner than the original.  Unsure if that is part of my issue.

Did you ever solve your poor filter fitment?

Nope.  I can't figure out what the issue is.  Bad batch of OEM filters which are too thick?  Something wrong with my air cleaner housing?  I don't know.  

When I get to the air cleaner I will try to get some dimensions for you. Remind me if I forget...
