Transmission Swap and other things

Hi everyone

Putting a five speed into my "72"  Have never done this before, so am looking for tips, guidance, and answers to some questions.

I have the car in the "air" (along with @SteveJ bench)

Transmission jack (and helper)

Exhaust removed

5 speed getting ready

Transmission swap 1.jpgTransmission swap 3.jpgTransmission swap 2.jpgTransmission swap 4.jpg

Will also be putting in a new clutch kit (Exedy 06029), Fidanza flywheel, RT mount for the Diff. and a rebuilt Master Vac (Harmon Classic Brakes)

I am putting new seals front and rear with a new gasket for the front cover in the 5 speed.

Questions

What is best pratice for installing the seals?  They appear to be lubed on the inside lip, should the outside be lubed before installing?

Does the front cover gasket need gasket cement or should it go in dry?  (old gasket seamed to be glued to the transmission)

Should I get new bolts for the flywheel?     Clutch?

I am sure I will have more questions as I move along and will update as I proceed.

Thank You so much for all the information I have recieved in the past.   This site is great!

Steve

Looks like the 4 speed is still in there.  You might be ready with a way to stop the engine from tilting backward when you remove it.  Some people insert a 4x4 between the valve cover and firewall, others put a jack under the back of the oil pan.

Don't forget to replace your pilot bearing.  Try the bread trick.

Hylomar Blue is popular for things like that front cover gasket.  Doesn't harden but seals well.

@patcon

Funny you ask, because I wrote down how I did it so I could rember how to get it back down.😉

I Jack Stands and lifting 2.jpgJack stands and lifting 1.jpgJack stands and lifting 4.jpg

The cribbing is 15" to where the tire sits.

I raise the front to get my jack stands under the frame rails and then the back to get my jack satnds under the rear frame.

Then I went back and put double 2" x 8" blocks under each jack stand. (maybe could have done this on the first lift)

This gives me enough room to get my jack with blocking under the car   Back first at the diff and then front at the cross memberJack stands and lifting 3.jpg

Blocking for the jack is 1 - 6 x 6 & 1 x4 x 4

As an aside to your aside I am also installing a Z Story exhaust. I think also did, any hints for the install?

O’Rielys also has a rental tool puller that works extremely well. Take a Quick Look on the depth of the old bushing to give you an idea for the new one. Learned the hard way.🤦‍♂️

I did...

I would install it loose and then when you like how it fits tighten everything up. I used exhaust paste. I don't think I would do that again unless I had a leak! I haven't found anything that will dissolve the exhaust paste. I think a paint stripper with MEK would be necessary or a chisel. And chisels and prett SS exhaust don't mix. So hopefully I don't have to take it apart anytime soon. I made my hanger pieces after I had the exhaust in the way I wanted it. The tabs on the muffler help to get it oriented the right way. Check the exhaust tip and make sure it is correct. I had to tweak mine so the bevel cut looked correct and plumb

Zed        Went ahead and ordered the Hylomar Blue     Delivery Feb. 26th to March 16th    Hope they are just messing with me.

Was jusst going to stack some wood under the oil pan or does the engine need to drop a bit to slide the transmission off?

Remind me how the bread trick works

Thanks for your help!     Steve

Edit: I understand how you're doing it now.

Stupid question but will your transmission jack go up high enough to get it out/in?

I used a motorcycle lift and it wouldn't go very high.

Not a stupid question.....made me go and check it out.   Yes it will go high enough😊
