February 8Feb 8 comment_674283 It will be easier to separate them if the engine tilts down some. But if you don't support it, the valve cover will hit the firewall. Many people recommend getting two sacrificial bolts that match the transmission bolts. Then grind the heads off. You hand thread them into the block to act as alignment dowels when you remate them Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/69241-transmission-swap-and-other-things/?&page=2#findComment-674283 Share on other sites
February 8Feb 8 comment_674284 You'll still want to use the paper gasket it with it. I think it might be part of the countershaft bearing shim calculation. Not 100% sure though. And don't lose the shim, it might stick in the cover and you don't realize it's there. The bread trick is to just stuff some bread in to the pilot bearing hole, then pound a rod in on top of it. It generates hydraulic pressure through the bread and will force the bearing out. Don't forget to check the fit of the new bushing on the inpout shaft too. Yum...  Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/69241-transmission-swap-and-other-things/?&page=2#findComment-674284 Share on other sites

Not the close ratio one?  Really just looking for a fifth gear for highway cruising. I hope I like it. The main shaft seems solid and there were no big chunks on the drain plug. Everything turns smoothly and it shifts into all the gears. The 5 speed had the spring/lip facing the transmission. Will check the one on my 4 speed before I install the new one just to be sure. (for sure never touched) Are you talking about a puller for the pilot bushing? Also long as they're long enough to have enough sticking out to grab and unthread. I guess you could err on the long side and trim them if it's a problem. 5" seems excessive I did not coat my stainless header. I might if it seems too hot under the hood but probably not Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/69241-transmission-swap-and-other-things/?&page=2#findComment-674288 Share on other sites
February 8Feb 8 comment_674289 You'll have to grind on the shifter or cut the tunnel's sheet metal. So my advice or common sense to you would be drive it and make sure it goes in each gear without popping out when you get on the gas pretty strong. Do reverse too before you put the console back on. Another "good idea" while you there is the choke lever mount from Mr Art Singer.  Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/69241-transmission-swap-and-other-things/?&page=2#findComment-674289 Share on other sites

I thought that I read in your thread that you did get your header coated. If your going without maybe I will also, can you get them coated after they been run? Sorry I wasn't clear - I used 2 short & two long - my pic had 5 - 3 short, but I only used 2 of those. 4 in total Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/69241-transmission-swap-and-other-things/?&page=2#findComment-674397 Share on other sites
