240z Differences 1970-1973

As the subject states... What's been updated, modified, swapped

etc from the 1970 240z throught to the 1973 model. Anything at

all? How similar are they? They look pretty similar anyway... :stupid:

It's just that I'm on the lookout for a '73 - which is why I'm asking.

Should I settle for "any" 240z, so be it a 1970, '71, '72 or '73?

The only difference that comes to mind is that the 73 came with the flat-top Hitachi carburetors, which can be very troublesome and are prone to catch on fire. The stock 70-72 models have the round-top SU's. If you get a 73, you can install the round-top SU's on it, with the proper linkage, if you want. I'm in the process of doing that myself.

The plan is to do a LS1/T56 conversion, so I'm mostly curious

about the cosmetics... Interior, lights etc. Although I'm interested

in all little details differing between the different years.

There are MANY differences between the year models of 240Z's. Go to www.zhome.com and scroll down the frame on the left of the screen to the area labeled: Production & Sales History and select "Production Changes 69-73" for a good list of the changes that have occurred.

Lots of detail changes and "improvements", updates to the wiring harnesses and features, fine tuning of the design etc. Lots more changes than just the switch to the crappy "boat anchor" carburetors.

I know the 70 &71 are lighter.

One main difference I think.

I know when its time for me to buy another 240z I want a 70/early 71.

It should also be pointed out that in Aus we didn't get Boat Anchors on our 73 Model 240z's.

We were left alone till 74 when the 260z arrived with boat anchors.

I believe Euro Spec 240z's were very similar to the Aus spec ones. So this might apply to you Phillip.

Bambi is right check Zhome.com as there's so many differences and we have stated them so many times it's easier to refer you onto http://zhome.com where it's all been documented with pictures etc..

What the hell is a "boat anchor" anyway, besides the one you

attach a line to and toss overboard - from a boat (mind you...) ???

They are referring to the carbs fitted to the 73 model Z's in the USA, they have a bad reputation, and are not useful as anything but a boat anchor. They are identified by the square top (squared edges) (not rounded top).

Differances

In a nutshell:

Early Zeds 1970 to 1971?:

generally reffered to as series 1

People say they are Lighter beacuse they were made from thinner metal I believe, or no rust proofing/underbody goo.

No metal storage bins behind the seats, they were plastic things (i've never seen the them so someone else can describe them).

cosmetically different badges on the rear quarter panne (240Z badge)l, vents in the hatch. different steering wheel (no holes) and center console. Non reclining seats.

Later Zeds 72 to 73

center console with ashtray rear of the gear stick,

Round quarter pannel badges that read Z. No vents in hatch, vents covered by the Z badge. Reclining seats, holes in the steering wheel.

73's had illuminated ventilation controlls.

All parts are interchangeable for 240z models i believe.

Not true.

For USA Spec cars :

Many differences in wiring harnesses, fuse box, and connectors, and switches.

Mustache bars & front diff mount changed when diff was moved rearward in late 71, so you must have the correct ones.

Shifter cut-out in body must be modified to use the "B" trans in a car that was mfg'd with the "A" trans installed.

Bumpers and brackets changed in 73. Must have correct brackets for specific bumper.

Different Brake Master cylinder on early cars. (Reservoirs reversed on later M.C.'s

*This is just off the top of my head, there are other things that are not interchangable with out replacing other items as well.

Z Therapy sells pre-1973 carbs to Z cars. I do not have any experience with their products, but other members of this forum posted some positive opinions.
