Hopefully the bumping isn't the same problem I had a couple months ago when I replaced my cartridges. The cartridge retainer bung at the top of the strut would not screw down far enough to contact the top of the cartridge, allowing the cartridge to bounce freely up and down inside the strut. If it was bumping before the cartridge was replaced, then that probably isn't the problem. Victor.

No Victor, that's not the problem. The "bung" at the top screwed down nicely, no movement of the cartridge.

Noise only occurs when hitting a bump and appears to be coming from a more central location in the rear.

I intend to check out the mounting of the fuel tank tomorrow to see if that's the problem.

Any more suggestions anyone ?????

Check the rubbers on the tranverse link by giving it a bit of a tug (no, the tranverse link!) and look for any movement.

Not the exhaust banging around??

BTW - NSW were only interested in getting up to Caxton Street to chase the mighty beer and women. Heard they had a table booked at one of the local eateries for 8.30pm.

They were not playing a game of footy. Heard they enjoyed the beer including the ones at half time!ROFL

It's amazing how long those old oil filled shock's are lasting isn't it? My 2 + 2 still had the original's in her and now has good gas ones at the back.

I've just refilled the oil (20w motorbike for oil) for the front and it's as firm as I need it! Cheap replacement for the front: $20 for the back: $250.....

Has anyone else tried refilling the oil shock cartridges??

No Chris, it's not the transverse link (I DID give it a good tug). In fact, I gave everything I could lay my hands on a good tug, shove, twist, push, squeeze and, yes, even a pull.

I've tested the tightness of every nut and bolt I can lay a spanner on.

I've climbed into the back and bounced up and down, even had "She who is the boss" drive while I curled up in the foetal position in the back trying to locate the noise. All to no avail.

Any more suggestions ??????????????

Hi Rick:

I wonder if your front differential mount is failing/failed? Usually when they do fail you get the clunk when the clutch is engaged on take off from a stop, but there really isn't much in the back of the car that is centrally located that can make noise. Just a thought.

Oh, sometimes the E-brake cables can flop around and make noise when going over bumps. They are hung by spring-like retainers from the chassis.

Nice try Carl, but it's only a couple of months ago that a brand spanking new, second hand, reconditioned diff replaced the old worn out one.

E-Brake = Emergency brake ??????????????????

We call 'em Hand Brakes.

Didn't think of that one, thanks mate, I'll check it out.

Yep, E-Brake = Hand Brake

When the Diff was replaced, did you (or whomever) replace or examine the rubber/steel insulator mount for damage? It's a common weak point. Also maybe something is loose there, like bolts that attach the diff to the insulator, or the bolt that mounts the insulator to the chassis mounting bar?

As stated before, ....there really isn't much in the back of the car that is centrally located that can make noise, except the diff and the spare tire. Maybe the spare tire isn't tightly connected to the well that it sits inside?
