July 19, 200321 yr comment_44492 There are 2 kinds of 81-83 280zxs.A turbo model and a non-turbo model. The common thing to do is to swap the engine from the turbo model (L28Et) and drop it into the Z car of Choice( any 70-78 Zcar) You can keep your existing tranny and drivetrain if you want. The L28et is desighned for turbo applications and the non-turbo engine isn't.Its alot cheaper to find an engine(in a junkyard or more preferrabley from a runnning turbo ZX auto models are real cheap sometimes) and get it installed.Other options also include buying a already built up engine for lots of dough:Check these links out:http://www.zcarperformance.comhttp://www.geocities.com/spized1969/Most of these sites feature the early Z but you can swap an L28et(turbo 280zx motor) into your ZX!! July 19, 200321 yr comment_44509 Don't sweat it being new, thats what this site is for. Also if you do some searches in the search menus you can find other threads on the same subject.I noticed an error in my last post. I said you could transplant the engine to70-78 Zs but you can also transplant them into 79-83 Zxs also!!Even your ZX.Also i fixed one of the links in my last post.Hey since you drive a ZX you will love this one!!!http://www.angelfire.com/extreme/280zxt/ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7081-turbo/#findComment-44509 Share on other sites
July 19, 200321 yr comment_44510 The only thing that could make this project unworthwhile would be too much rust.I was reading in another forum about your rust probs.Make sure you have a solid car first before you start putting $$$ into it.Look at your floorpans, frame rails, make sure there isn't holes, Or very bad rust. If there is you can buy replacement parts. If there is just too much the only option may be just to hunt another car down if you want to get serious about performance. If you can post pics of your car and I'm sure other members can help you.PS if you gotta hunt another car down find a 240z (if not a 280z), my OPINION is that the early Z just feels much more Z like.If not find a 280zx turbo.:devious: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7081-turbo/#findComment-44510 Share on other sites
July 19, 200321 yr Author comment_44550 yeah there isn't much rust on the car it's just the one spot on the roof. but yeah i would like to look for an earlier z but the problem with that is my budget. i'll be the first to admit that i don't get paid enough for my job. but yeah if i can find an old junker somewhere i'll get it but than the other prob that i have is i don't have anywhere to put it right now.Jason Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7081-turbo/#findComment-44550 Share on other sites
July 19, 200321 yr comment_44554 If your car is good then find the turbo motor get it swap motors then sell the other car to get some of your money back .Or just junk it.
