Posted July 19, 200321 yr comment_44507 ok on my z i have a problem. over the years and of some obvious neglect. a rust spot has develpoed at the point where the windshield meets the roof of the car. and well i was in some rain recently and i noticed that it is leaking. so the question is should i replace the whole roof or find someone that is really good with sheetmetal work. my first choice is to find someone that is good with sheet metal. but than the question is how much is this going to cost me??? so any advice would be greatly appreciated.Jason Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7084-rust/ Share on other sites
July 19, 200321 yr comment_44528 If it's just a tiny spot then do sheetmetal work. Just cut out the rusted portion and weld in a piece cut to fit. Bondo can help make it look good as new Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7084-rust/#findComment-44528 Share on other sites
July 19, 200321 yr Author comment_44548 well that's it it's not just a little spot it runs along the whole front of the roof. but it's only leaking in one spot.Jason Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7084-rust/#findComment-44548 Share on other sites
July 20, 200321 yr comment_44563 Well I'm not too familiar with the replacement roof panels. You should go the route that requires the least amount of welding so you won't be using loads of bondo on the areas that become distorted from the heat. If the replacement panel must be welded all around the roof then don't do it, just replace the rusted metal. Good luck Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7084-rust/#findComment-44563 Share on other sites
July 20, 200321 yr comment_44568 Sand the roof and or use a center punch to check for soft or thin spots. If it runs all the way across you may have to replace the entire roof. It's not too tough of a job. You only have to cut and weld across the "A" and "C" pillars where it's easy to blend in. The welds are short so there is less warpage. Just take good measurements and do it the same on both parts (the one being removed and the one being installed) you may be able to cut the spot welds on the "C" pillar at the factory joint. I helped a friend do his beemer and it turned out good. It's much easier than a quarter panel.Good luckCarlps you might want to look into an electric anti corrosion device. I can't remember the brand. Maybe someone else does. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7084-rust/#findComment-44568 Share on other sites
