Posted August 4, 200321 yr comment_46091 I just bought a 75 280Z. It runs well when warm, and the person I bought it from told me that it needed a new air regulator. The idle on the car is set at 1100 for this reason so it won't die when cold. But this wreaks havoc on my gas mileage.I was able to repair the high/low beam switch, would it be possible to repair the air regulator. I was thinking if I could flush it out with a solvent would it start working again. This is a $117 part so it would be worth fixing.Or should I quit being a :stupid: and just pony up for a new one.BTW the car does stutter and miss when cold but runs very nice when warm. Thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7342-75-280z-air-regulator/ Share on other sites
August 4, 200321 yr comment_46095 I don't know if you can repair it or not... but it sounds to me more like a problem with the cold start valve and not the air regulator. If you have a Factory Service Manual, it will give you simple tests to check the operation of the cold start valve, and the water temperature switch and thermotime switch mounted in the front of the water inlet under the thermostat. Verify everything there is OK before you start spending any money on replacement parts as it might just be the sensor and not the "valve" or regulator in the first place. There is also an air temp sensor in the front of the AFM as well that should be checked too... If you don't have an Factory Service Manual, you really ought to get one with the fuel injected cars as there are so many little things that can cause major problems... it will drive you nuts diagnosing a problem with out it... Check with z@datsundude.com for a factory service manual, they should still be available for about 72 bucks.. yes, it's expensive, but no more than buying a part that you really didn't need in the first place. August 5, 200321 yr comment_46187 I'm doing this from memory and its been some time, here goes. There is somewhat square unit behind that air reg. When you remove the cover there is a gear.Mark the location with white paint. loosen the holding screw while holding pressure on the gear. This is the can't remember part. You either move it two teeth clockwise or counter clockwise.I did that for years on a 280 I had to stop that cold nature. You must return it to your paint mark before inspection or you will fail emissions.
