Posted August 6, 200321 yr comment_46260 I pulled a 280zx distributor at a junkyard to throw on my L24. I've been searching the threads here and on Zcar.com and the posts said to use the ZX coil with the conversion. Since I first heard of this on the Z garage website and never saw this mentioned, I purchased the Crane cams PS20 coil from MSA. Will this work? March 22, 200420 yr comment_73800 I just asked Motorsport Autop the same question they said yes.I'm gonna investigate some more though. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7374-coil-for-zx-dist-conversion/#findComment-73800 Share on other sites
March 22, 200420 yr comment_73825 Any low resistance 12V coil should work fine, one that is for electronic ignition. You just can't use a coil like the original 240 points coil, which is 6V and a high resistance primary coil. March 23, 200420 yr comment_73843 How many ohms would you consider low? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7374-coil-for-zx-dist-conversion/#findComment-73843 Share on other sites
March 23, 200420 yr comment_73894 Don't forget, when you get your new coil, bridge (remove) the ballast resistor. If your old coil had a double spade connector on one of it's posts, steal that to connect the two sides of the ballast terminals, then tape it up. March 23, 200420 yr comment_73901 Thanks.I measured about 1.7 Ohms on the primary side of the coil.Is this a disadvantage?I would think it would limit my secondary voltage. It's a Crane PS20,should I upgrade or stick with this one? March 23, 200420 yr comment_73938 It's been a while but I think the old style coils were like 30-300 ohms while new style are 10 or less. Most of the new ones I've seen have "for use with electronic ignitions only" printed on the side. These are the low impeadance ones.
