cam question

ok,

So i've only worked on push rod motors thus far, and I've got to put a new cam in my 240 Z. i imagine the overhead cam situation can't be any harder to do, maybe even easier since I don't have to pull the engine. But I'm just curious if there is anything in particulare i should know. I've got the new cam and the springs and the retainers. And this may be a long shot, but I was hoping somebody out there new the torque specs for the job. Thanks to anyone who would like to share their know how with a Z car novice.

It's really easy, the only thing you must do is block the timing chain in place so that the tensioner dosen't fall out. if it does you have to pull the front off of the engine to get it back in place. They make a plastic tool for the job, but if I remember right I just used a hunk of broom handle. If you look down inside the front of the block you will see the tensioner pushing on the chain, that is where you need to put your block.

Other than that just loosen and remove the rockers, remove the drive gear, 2 (I think)bolts on the cam hold down and carefully remove the cam from the cam towers. installation is just the reverse. You are right that it is easier than a pushrod engine to change.

If I remember correctly, you will need new cam followers for your new cam, as the old followers have taken a set (worn to match) to the old cam. New followers, would mean new rockers. The actual follower is the part on the rocker that bears against the cam lobes. Maybe someone else here will confirm this information.

The spendy part is the rockers. Every one that is in the know has warned me to always use factory rockers ! which I have done . Suposidly the after market ones will eat the cam in not too many miles becuse they are soft. Just passing on info. here and if any one has different information , please come out with it . Factory rocker arms are spendy.

Dose anyone make a roller rocker that will fit the Z? With the small wheel on the rocker where it hits the cam.

While talking cams. How can I tell what cam I have? Are there stamped #s on it that will tell me what I have? Now that I am going with the matching # motor I would like to know what I have :stupid: I know it's a hotter then stock cam but would still like to know.

Carguy,

If your cam is a regrind, which it probably is, it will probably be tough to tell what the grind is. If there are any numbers they will probably be on the end under the drive sproket. Since this will just be a part # it won't do you much good without knowing the manufacture. More than likely the only way to tell what it is would be to measure it, get your degree wheel out and your dial indicator and start turning :)
