I want to buy a L28et engine that Is built up a bit or rebuilt. Basically I'm looking for an L28et in excellent shape, to drop in my 280z. Right now I will be shopping around for the right price, I'm just wondering if any of you guys have one laying around you can sell me.

I forgot to mention that I would like a complete engine with turbos(which of course would include manifolds) and anything else needed to complete the swap that is engine related.

Yeah I wanna upgrade to something faster, plus i've never enjoyed the thrill of a turbo charged vehicle.

Best bet in that case would be to call some junk yards and try to locate a wrecked 280ZX Turbo that still has a good motor. If you can find one that's a rollover or the body has been crushed pretty bad, then it'll be cheaper. Buying the whole car like this will ensure that you have all the pieces you need to make the swap complete.

Try some of the yards up here in San Antonio, Corpus, The Valley, Houston, and Austin. Dallas would be a good place also, but it might be too far from you to make it worth while.

Be prepared to hold on.

My Dad bought (and rebuilt) a Chrysler Conquest when I was in High School. 1.8L 4-banger w/ a Turbo. About 190 hp (not bad for back in '87). I got to drive it twice. What a rush! That car would literally push you back into the seat and it was fun to drive. Just about any turbo car will be about the same (with slight differences due to engine size). Trust me...you'll become addicted.

I will check the junk yards and going to corpus is easy.

I am not sure what to expect from there, plus I was looking for a better than stock engine. A rebuilt stock engine is good, I would take it (or the car) if the price is right. I am very worried about taking a chance on a Junkyard engine due to my limited knowledge of recognizing quality in a pick and pull enviroment.

There was a good ZX turbo in my home town but the turbo(with manifolds) & cylinder head are gone. Rats. Oh well i'd imagine that engine would need help not being run in 8 years.

Ernie,

Another good place to look is www.hybridz.org many of these guys yank the stock engines, wiring, ECU and all to do a V8 swap and they do not want to keep the old L6 so they sell them off. This is how I got my L28E that will eventually go into my 240Z. Got it cheap too, $150 for a running engine! Not turbo mind you but still a great find.

I found an engine at the junkyard. It was already out of the car.:(

All the ECU and wiring are missing as well as the turbo. It has a P90 head and the guy says it is out of an 81 model.

I have no way of knowing how it runs or how many miles it has on it. I don't know how long it has been sitting there either. Is there supposed to be a flywheel attached to it? It doesn't have one, but will my 78 280z stock flywheel fit.

He wants $300, I wanted to do a rebuild anyway. Do you guys think that is fair? Do you guys have any tips to offer me while I asses the condition of the engine.

Then I still have to buy an ECU and a Turbo and wiring, and who knows what else I'll need for the swap.

Is it a smart move to make the purchase with a budget of 2grand?

I'll still need to buy another turbo and rebuild. Plus I'm gonna put it in a 280z so I Need to be prepared for what surprised will pop up during that expedenture.

I've really been looking for a running car but no luck.

I'd probably keep looking. Here are a couple places that have been mentioned on this forum before, not exactly around the corner from you but at least in the same state.

You may also try salvage yards in San Antonio, Houston, and Austin since none of these are that far from you; it would be a long day but you can make the round trip drive in one day to any of these places. Dallas may require an overnight stay or a second driver to help out.
