August 19, 200321 yr comment_47310 Thank, kmack. I'll probably buy a bearing puller and one or more brass punches - just because I can. New toys. When I tear the transmission down, I'll replace every bearing and seal I can. That's what I'm doing with the rest of the car. Every piece of rubber, every seal, every bearing, every u-joint that I can get a replacement for will be done. I'm looking to essentially have a "new" z-car when I'm done (or as close as I'm ever gonna get :classic: ). And I'll take MANY digital pictures, and maybe even video the teardown since I've never been inside a transmission. Thanks! August 22, 200321 yr Author comment_47565 Well, my tranny problems are over. I replaced the '79 5-speed with an '83 5-speed. The shop charged me $800 for everything and did the job in one day. I'm very pleased with the results. By the way, I've attached a picture of the donor car. They replaced its tranny with a competition unit and had the original one sitting around. Really smooth shifting, close ratio unit. The L28 in my '73 240z is very happy with this box. I'm a happy camper again.:classic: I'd still like to work on one myself, but simply don't have the room. Maybe next year... BILL D. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7441-transmission-noise/?&page=3#findComment-47565 Share on other sites
