SU carbys?

Hey all Z-lovers!

i have a '76 260z 2+2, ive been doing it up a bit.... (my first car)

I just bought another spare car for parts also, im going to change the motors, question is i have a set of flat top SU carbys (huge things) and a set of round tops.

Which set is better & why, what are the better charicteristics of both sorts???

Also what pretty simple cheap things can i do to boost a few horses? Any ideas what a turbo kit would be worth.

I am in country South Australia.

Hi,

The dome top early 240Z carbys are the better. The 260Z

carbys with the flat top were set up with emmissions in

mind and once their gone you might as well throw them away.

Type in Ztherapy I think they would have the info on them.

Exstractors ,cat flow ,Head work, but even with that I am told

your looking at less than 200hp.

i actually found where i should have posted my carby question, sorry everyone i just saw the engine board & assumed i should post in here.... sorry again.

are those the dome top carbs in that pic there???

one sets like that and the other set well is huge & chunky looking.

so your saying the smaller round tops are better, i hope so there not so ugly, LOL.

as for the engine mods for extra horse, i already have a set of genie extractors for it.... what sort of head work are you talking about, i was thinking of getting a head boared out, since i have 2 spare anyways...

also i have a question on the water cooled manifolds... when i got both my engines the water cooling was disconnected, any ideas why this is???

Do not know a great deal on mods to the head

but can piont you in right direction when I have more time

I can help you out if you are putting the 240Z

What engine do you have in your car currently mellow?

The www.ztherapy.com website will tell you all the about how good the SU's are. The flat tops are no good from a performance point of view.

http://www.geocities.com/zgarage2001/engine.html will tell you all about what mods you will need to make your Z go faster.

The water manifold on the intake is to allow the engine to warm faster and was part of the emission regulations especially in the US. it's no big deal if there not connected but will improve warm up time.

The Carbys in the pic are Brit SU,s they have the float

camber at the bottom the 240Z carbys are better in my opinion.

The 240 Carby's have the float camber to the side and the

mixture nut at the bottom. Got a spare set of SU's (240)

that need an overhaul have not gotten round to it yet.

The engine in the picture is a L26 Spare. I have an L28

Turbo motor I am looking to put back in. looking for a suitable

Manifold while I learn more about Turbo setups.

You wouldn't happen to know adout Diahatsu's the

wife's car just seized up on us this morning. Done a head gasket

on one 12 years ago that was fun. Think I will have to borrow a

Migets hands for the weekend. Not much Room in the engine Bay!

If you are ever looking for parts for your 260 I have good interior

and allsorts of other parts. Pass them off Cheap or Swap?

I live in the Port Adelaide Area.

@ Gav - the engines i currently have are....both are #P30's which would make them L26 engines?!?!

Im reading the links you posted up now, thanks alot for that!

@ sammy, your from Adelaide, well im not in desperate need of parts now.... but once i have this new engine in my car i will be rebuilding the old one... or atleast attempting, i have a rolling shell (rusty bucket, LOL) that i can have the engine in while im doing it up but i will be needing a new water pump and radiator.... the radiator doenst need to be really good but it just needs to work so i can muck around with the engine....

i also need other bits which are uncommon, like a turbo kit, ram pods or high air flow pipes a nitrous kit wouldnt be bad either...

i understand how uncommon these things are just thought it may be worth a go.....

i also have pics of both sets of my carbys they are pending im not sure how long that takes but ill post them up when there done...

Hi, Mellow

Sounds like your looking to do the same as I am.

The L26 in my car at the minute is just to get her running.

I have an L28ET to go into her when I find the best Turbo

setup. Gaven & Ben have been giving me good advice on where

to look and what are the best blocks ,heads ect. Go to the search

function and type in (horsepower) should take you to the post.

I can help you out with the radiator I have a 240Z of

an auto not sure about the water pump? I'll have a look!

As for the other looking into a turbo kits off a patrol

a company in victory supply, need to find out from Ben if its

compatible? Ben,s the man in the know about turbo's check out

his Gallery.

I'll have a look at your pic,s when they get approved it takes

two or three days. I just got mine up!!

I think you have a L26 yes.

The l24 will read P30 on the block and a L26 is just a stroked l24 meaning crank would be slightly different to give the longer rotation.

I don't think I've ever had an L26 lying around to be honest just l28's and l24's.

the L28 is a bored and stroked L24 so it's a bored L26.

Hope that clears it up.

Hey agian...

@ Gav... yes both engines are L26's.....

@sammy..... a L28ET wouldnt be bad.... dont you need to upgrade brakes & get your car complienced to put a bigger engine in it??? Sounds like alot of hassle to me....
