Quick Brake Fluid Question

0100

Recommended Posts

My brake fluid is a little low and I want to fill it up but don't know what to use.

I don't know what is in their right now so what is safe to put in?

Dot 3, 4, or 5?

This winter I will be doing the entire brake system(lines, big brakes, rotors etc.) so I'm trying to be cheap right now.

I think dot3 is what datsun recomended.Maybe they didn't have dot 5 then.Anyway, As the brakes wear the fluid goes down to fill the void.Unless there is a leak, you shouldn't loose any.I use the front brake level as a tool to get an idea of my brake pad status. If you fill it ,then it will overflow out when you squeeze the piston back in to replace the pads. What a mess.

Dot 4 is good. As far as I know, there was no Dot 4 back then, and it is what's commonly available now.

Dot 5 is the silicone type I believe. It is a purple color. If that's the case, don't mix it with the Dot 3 or 4. If you want to go with dot 5 you should do a complete flush and replacement of all the fluid.
