Q's: Throttle shaft play & L28 cost?

Q1. How much play in the throttle shaft of 240Z SU's is ok? If I were to say I could just feel a bit, would that be acceptable? Any other things to look out for when buying 2nd hand SU's?

Q2. What sorta money am I lookin at to pick up an L28?

Thanks :)

Q1: If you can "just feel" a bit of play, then think about how much air can get into the carb through that little bit of play? You should not be able to feel any otherwise, you'll run into a lean condition and you won't be able to ever egt the carbs set right. If there is any play at all, then the shafts need to be re-bushed.

Q2: Expect to pay anywhere from $150-250 for a used L28 from a pick-n-pull yard or junkyard. A lot depends on the yard and the current state of the engine. If you're looking for one that's been rebuilt, expect to pay at least $600 and up depending on where the engine was rebuilt and by whom.

I'd have thought if there was only a litle bit of play, the amount of air that'd get through would be negligible. However i wouldn't know :) , I'm still learning when it comes to carbs.

Is rebushing the shafts a simple/cheap thing?

The simplest way to check for too much play in the throttle shaft would be to spray some carb cleaner around the throttle shaft on the outside of the carb body while the engine is idling.... if it revs up.. you got too much clearance and you would need to re-bush it.

I know ZTherapy has the bushings to do the job, don't know how cheap shipping them to OZ would be..it shouldn't cost too much if you can find them locally..

The way I check the condition of the shaft is with some carb cleaner or starting fluid - spray it at the throttle shaft while the engine is running ( don't get any in the carb intake ) - If the idle goes up - it is leaking air - time to rebush. Sorry I do not know how much that costs. I took my carbs off and put fuel injection on!

I agree with the others if you get that much play it will be leaking and you will never get them set right.

I had mine rebushed at $50 AUD a side and there was no play afterwards.

You should also check the pistons in the SU's and if they drop evenly if they don't you won't get them set right either.

Check the condition of all bolts that influence the settings of the carbs are they rounded good condition etc..

Throttle shaft bolts, mixture nuts(if there british ones), the ones next to the dome that adjust air flow.

Look up a carbie specialist in the yellow pages. www.yellowpages.com.au

I know of a good one here in Melbourne but that doesn't help you.

I would recommend rebuilding any carb as a general rule anyway in terms of reliability etc...

For an L28 engine price could vary in Australia if you looking at a second hand basic engine I see them for $300 in the trading post.

Anything that had good work done to it may cost a bit more :).

And remember if your planning to use those SU's on a L28 you will want bigger needles and possibly seats otherwise she'll run lean top end and feel crap.

I've had the same thing happen to me so many times but the good thing is it shows we all agree on how to solve the problem or at least problem shoot :).

It's also good to see that we are all actively on the site helping each other out. :classic:

Wow! Quite a response there. :)

Thanks for all the advice guys. Unfortunatly the carbs i'm lookin at buying are 1300km away and aren't on a motor atm, so can't do the carby cleaner test. I'll go have a chat to the local zed guru for some advice on rebushing carbs.

As for the L28, I'm not looking for anything flash as it'll only be staying in the car for a year or so. Just want something with a bit more poke than my L26 for that year. $~300 sounds fair to me. :)
