Posted September 15, 200321 yr comment_49823 I put a '78 5 speed in my 240Z. The shifter shifts nicely into allof the gears...... But once it is in gear it has alot of play(flops around). What is in the top of the trans that would be worn / or broke? Is it some type of bushing or ball & socket? Maybe nylon?- Jeff Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/7918-loose-shift-lever/ Share on other sites
September 15, 200321 yr comment_49828 Sounds like the bushings for the shifter are worn out or gone completely. MSA has a bushing kit that you can get. Not sure exactly of the price, but I know it's not very expensive. And it's definitely worht it to get rid of the play. One goes on the bottom of the shifter lever, the other two pieces fit into the hole that the metal pin goes through to lock the lever into the transmission mechanism. You can purchase a set of these bushings for under $15 (maybe under $10) from MSA. The difference between having and NOT having these bushings in your shifter is like NIGHT and DAY. September 15, 200321 yr comment_49832 DEFINATELY worth the few dollars. A sloppy shifter will just drive you nuts and possibly embarass you if you miss a shift. Hate to watch you turn red if some ricer beats you from a red light.....
