Loose shift lever

I put a '78 5 speed in my 240Z. The shifter shifts nicely into all

of the gears...... But once it is in gear it has alot of play(flops around). What is in the top of the trans that would be worn / or broke? Is it some type of bushing or ball & socket? Maybe nylon?

Sounds like the bushings for the shifter are worn out or gone completely. MSA has a bushing kit that you can get. Not sure exactly of the price, but I know it's not very expensive. And it's definitely worht it to get rid of the play.

Hi Jeff:

There is a 3 piece set of bushings that should be installed on your shifter. One goes on the bottom of the shifter lever, the other two pieces fit into the hole that the metal pin goes through to lock the lever into the transmission mechanism. You can purchase a set of these bushings for under $15 (maybe under $10) from MSA. The difference between having and NOT having these bushings in your shifter is like NIGHT and DAY.
