Help on some rust

Dead Roman

Recommended Posts

Aight, i found this z here in tejas my home. the guy says it runs and from the pics ive seen the interior is in great condition. the rear hatch landing is rusted bad and the floor pans need replacing. this car comes with new front struts new calipers and a new hatch(no glass). I ave never patched rusat spot but this guy only wants 900 bux for the car. now this seems like a good deal to me if it would be relatively simple to fix the rust. Im going to go lok at it but the guy sent some decent pics, anyone who wants to see em i will send em to as i dont know how to post em.

By the looks of it, you are looking at another 900( the best floor pans are almost 400) in patch panels to fix the obvious rust, cuz when you get into it, you are probably going to find even more rust. Battery area looks kinda suspect and I'd imagine you'll find rust in the rockers going by the condition of the floors.

Unless you plan on making this a long term project, I'd look for something a little better. Or, if you can talk him down a couple hundred, this would make a good parts car.

Too bad the rest of the car isn't as clean as the engine....:ermm:

I see that the floor pan rust has not yet reached the frame rails, so that means you can get away with cutting out the sheetmetal arounnd that area, but wont have to weld or rivet new rails in. I did exactly this on my Z. I just got some steel and bent it and cut it to fit flat, and just riveted it in. Then sealed the edges really well with asphalt water sealant calking. then sealed and ruberized-undercoated the whole undrside and sealed and painted the inside. It only cost me about 45 Dollars. Don't take my word for it though, I have a 76 280z, and im not sure if my way would be kosher for 240z hard core purists, hehe. Do watever you feel is nessesary.

I am sorry but I don't agree with pennyman. The floor pans and the rocker pannels are part of the structureal members of the car. The safety of the car depends on the strength of this sheet metal . It is one thing to seal off the gaps for leaks and air coming in but sticking the car together with screws , pop rivets and tar is scarry. I dont often disagree with posts here and usually just pass on , but I dont want nubeys to get the wrong impression of what can be done safely . I know I will get some flack here but I call them as I see them . my 2c s

I find that if you don't have much money, and your floorpans are turning to powder under your feet, then its much safer to spend a little on some sheet metal and buy yourself some time while you save, rather than keep saving up and have your floor fall out from underneath you. Rusty, hole-pocked metal is much weaker than a new piece that has been riveted in. Not everyone has acces to a welder. We aren't talking about the frame rails mind you, just the pans where your feet rest. This is usually where water and ultimately rust can collect, and the sheet metal here is much thinner then on the framerails and rocker pannels. I should post some pics of the floorpans I fixed.....
