Tranny X-member different...

Every Z I have ever torn apart had a tranny X member that looked like this--even the 240's, but I have never been under anything older than 72. It has bushings and when you order the 280 bushing master kit from Suspenion Technics, it comes with these bushings. I was going through my 240 master kit and it has no bushings. My mechanic showed me what a 240 Xmember is supposed to look like and it was completely different--and required no bushings. When did it change? Sorry I don't have a photo of the 'supposed' 240 one, but it is completely different.

The Cross member (actually called the Rear Motor mount, though it attaches the transmission to the body) on my 1972 240Z (mfg'd in 11/71) does not look anything like the Cross Member in your picture.

If my memory is right, I think it changed mid to late 72..

Pretty sure my 73 had the later style with the bushings, but that's been years ago since I had that.....:cross-eye

The early style bolts solidly with a vertical bolt into a captured nut in a pocket off the trans tunnel.

This situation has re-surfaced in another car.

Question 1. I have never seen the early style, but am guessing converting to the new option is not an option.

#2. the boltholes in the tranny are the same, no?

#1 Correct, cannot convert without major cutting an welding of the newer style mount brackets into the tunnel

The early cross-member looks like yours, but eliminate the barrel shaped bushings that mount to the chassis and imagine a flat flange that bolts directly to the chassis. So, the early units only have one method for isolation....the later units provide isolation via the rubber mount and the barrel bushings at either end of the cross-member. Does this help at all

My Rear Engine mount looks like this too. (Less rust, more paint) Car mfg'd 11/71

My CA 240Z had the beginnings of Floorboard A/C from a bad weatherseal. Thank goodness I caught it with just a few minor perforations. POR'ed and Power Meshed the snot out of it last summer. Now good to go!
