Starting a sitting motor part.2

As a few of you would have read in my other post, i got the sitting motor started just fine, almost too fine, which is what brings me to this.

The 260z with L28E i got running runs about 5 times harder than my 280zx daily driver. I know the 260z has a better head and its lighter, but the power difference is much more than this.

I had gotten grudgingly used to the 280zx but this has opened my eyes to what its lacking, the 280zx is slow to pick up once you put the foot down and doesnt like to rev much over 3000-4000rpm, it makes more noise up there but not any more acceleration.

Ideas on what could be wrong? It has an electronic distributor so it shouldnt be the case but i will check the timing anyhow when i can borrow a light, i might also swap the plugs but what else?

If it's not liking to rev it could be any number of things. Could be fuel starvation check simple things like fuel filter, blocked injectors.

Could be faulty AFM or any number of electrical issues.

Could be just a tired motor also but it's more likely a tune issue with this sort of thing I'm not 100% sure with as I'm used to problems with carbs and ignition.

I forgot to mention i am not spending any serious dollras on this car :)

I have 5 litres of oil, oil filter and fel filter in my back seat. I spent all day doing the 2+2 it was late by the time i began on the 280zx, i couldnt get the sump plug off after 5 minutes so i gave up and called it a day :cheeky:

How do you check AFM function and clean injectors?

I swapped the battery over again tonight so i could drive the 2+2, and yes, it is still damn quick. Swapped it back to the 280zx, took it for a spin and it is pale in comparison. I wound it out to around 600rpm even though it was sounding restricted and things got a little smokey behind the car :ermm:

just recently a member posted a webpage that was the entire fuel injection manual for the Z series (bosch unit). I don't recall everthing but it had a list of things to do and servicing functions.

The p90 is probably what is helping that old engine the most it's an awesome flowing head. Had one in my 260z and it used to go pretty quick without any real mods.:classic:

I understand I'm a newbie to ZX's but I'd like to learn the fuel system as I'm thinking of a career with computers and the tuning of cars and using computers to diagnose cars and prep race cars :).

Not sure if i'll go that way but I have an interest and I will probably go turbo FI in my 240z one day even if it's not permanent.

Compression test could be ok but oil rings could be the problem with the smoke.

ZX would be a great car to tinker with EFI for the first time as the electronics in it are very simple and would form a good knowledge foundation for late model cars.

You should have bought my L28E 260Z and turbo manifolds, i dont think a complete set like that including running motor in a car will come up very often, especially at that price, but the new owner should be picking it up today and taking it down to tassie.

On the weekend i hope to test spark, compression and a few other things which may help the diagnoses along.
