Carbs Screws AAHHGG

I am trying to remove the 3 screws on the top of my round top su"s . On the back carb I have 2 of the 3 out and the 3rd is on its way to being stripped , I have sprayed the for two days with wd-40 and It seemed to have helped. Any suggestions on getting them out with out a drill, and does anyone know where to get replacement screws. The car had never been taken apart in its 31 year life so its a touch sticky with the nuts and bolts . Thanks Jeff:geek:

Can you get to the head of the screw with a small set of vice grips? If the phillips slot is what is stripping out, you should be able to get a pair of good vice-grips or perhaps channel locks to break it loose. Or, if you have one, a good bit in a torque driver might work.

If it's the threads that are stripping out, you're probably going to have to at least tap(chase) the threads with a tap when you're done. So, if you do strip out the threads, you may have to drill and re-tap them anyways....

The screw size is #10. Kmack (member here) found some nice stainless screws with an allen head, so finding new screws should be just a trip to a good hardware store or Lowe's/Home Depot.

I don't think the treats are stripped at all , just the screw it self , am gonna try the vise grips , I tried some linesman plyers but could get a good grip . if i get it all disassembled I am rebuilding them using a rebuild kit from bv and the video from ztherapy , the fuel line they provided in the rebuild kit is it ok to use or should I get the one from ztherapy , and its the fuel line from the bottom of the float to the adjustment ring <for lack of a better term>?

I've used the cheap rebuild kits 3 times now (3 differenr carz) with no problems. Mostly it's cleaning that seems to make them work well. The fuel line is the 4 inch or so hose that runs from the bottom of the float bowls to the nozzle. The cheap kits are okay/iffy- i use them, but the ZTherapy is definately better- you can order just the hose for $8 each from Ztherapy.

Also- the stripped screw: i've used a dremmel tool with a cut-off disk to "cut" a slot into the screwhead to use a regular screwdriver. But- be careful, and you'll need a new screw for sure!

Good news all 3 screws to both carbs came off , relatively easily , I sprayed them for a 3rd day all day then had my fiance hold them dowm with a towel as I used my weight to hold the screw driver on the screws , I got my rebuild kits from bv , I am waiting for my su video from ztherapy , I guess i should order the fuel lines as well , i was reading that any others seem to Melt? , I appreciate the help and suggestions , :classic: , any big don't when cleaning these carbs?

Don't be afraid of them!! People seem to think it involves some sort of VooDoo- as you'll see in the video, SU carbs are as simple as a toilet! Once you dive in, its easy.

My advice: clear a nice work area, and do one at a time, so you can reference back to the "whole" carb if you fear you've screwed up.

Stay organized and neat in disassembly. Layout some towels to place your parts in order. Clean with carb spray and an old tooth brush. Becareful with the pistons with the needles in them, don't let them roll off the table, drop them, or you may bend them. One at a time is good advice first time into them. The Video should get you through them and will educate yourself with what each screw does. You will be surprized how wrong the previous owner of your car had the carbs set up!ROFL

We still can't figure out how the guy ran our car so well when he had it? Leaking shafts, floats out of whack, no air tubes, no pistion oil, homemade air cleaner, 5+ lbs. of fuel pressure and this thing kicked-A, purred like a kitten at idle, and won races! I can't believe it! Some shade tree mechanics have all the luck, I gotta fail a few times before I get things right!

I have got the back carb rebuilt and all went very well , i am holding off the other til my brother shows up with his extra set of su's , i used a electric tooth brush best 4 bucks i think i ever spent, and old white teeshirts , took it slow and easy , gotta say they are quite simple, thought they were complex and extremely hard , waiting for my ztherapy intake to go much farther, I appreciate all the help you guy all have given during my carb issues especially Chino , thanks hope to post pics soon I will of my new carbs and manifold when all is done :D
