I bought a cam from motorsport (part# 10-2003) and I put about 6000 miles on it. after pulling off the valve cover to inspect it was very worn. I think it wasn't geting enough oil. Do I need to block off the cam oiler with the block off plates or do I need a new cam oiler?

I also bought a Schneider cam from MSA but it was the 10-2002 version. All these cams are internally oiled ....... look for small holes in the lobe surface. Installed cam in my stock 240Z last year but I also trashed the external oiling manifold and installed blockoff plates which are available at MSA. Rapid wear may be caused by marginal lubrication ....... feeding oil inside and outside to the manifold effectively lowers supply pressure. If you did nothing to the oil pump or the oil supply hole in the block, this may be your root cause.

Jason,

When you installed the new cam, did you also replace the rockers/lash pads? If not, this may be your problem. It is always important to replace the rockers/lash pads when installing a new cam. So, without out replacing them, the old rockers/lash pads will cause excessive wear on a new cam due to the wear pattern already formed from the old cam. Some of the more experienced engine guys on this site may want to elaborate upon this statement.

I replaced everything, pads, rockers, springs. When I bought the cam motorsport never mentioned I needed to block of the oiler. I noticed that they now have a note about this, and apparently they ship the block off plate with every new cam kit. I bought a new one today and will wait to see if this is true. I also needed to buy a new set of rockers, and I threw in the performance oil pump as well. In all about $400 dollars for what seems to be a 4 dollar mistake of not using the block offs!

man, sorry to hear about your cam but at least it's warning to others like me who are new to the Z thing.

as long as we're on this subject though, i was about to start a thread asking where to get performance parts for the L6, like a new cam. who is MSA? what other companies/catalogs should i look for? and most importantly, who should i stay away from?:finger:

Hi,

i installed a p90 head, without thinking about the head oiling system. i install it on top of the f54 block. the engine is installed on a 72 240z. i did not install the oiler from my old 240z system(e88 head-no place to bolt it in). am i facing a big problem?

It depends if you are using the old style 240 cam or the newer cam. The new cam has oil hole drilled in all of the lobes, easy to spot, the old style cam did not and needed the spray bar for lubercation. If you switched the P-90 head with the cam that came in the p-90 you should be OK.

As a side note I read somewhere and probably have it in my archives somewhere that the spray bar is the better method of lubercation. The internally oiled cams tend to burn something like lobes 1 and 8? and there is a method of blocking the cam and using the spraybar.

let me know the way, i still have the old e88 head, better if there is a way to use both.
