Well, the fastest Z I have seen and ridden in must be Steve Webb's "stealth Z" up in Dallas. The car is a 71 with a 280 ZXT motor. Last time I saw the car it was in the 400 hp 400 ft lb neighborhood and has always been an ongoing project. Maybe a member in Dallas has seen the car more recently. For all I know it has been destroyed by its prodigous power and insuffucient traction. It was a beast and was capable of keeping up with modified single turbo Supras and wicked 300ZX TT's.

Unless you are making some SERIOUS hp those numbers seem almost impossible, though it does look like you are also developing some pretty serious traction.

I'll see if I can find the magazine but a year ago or so this Japanese guy brought his RB26DETT powered 240z over to NZ for some drag championship at the time and pulled an 8.6xx

Well believe it or not, it is the torque curve that gets you there....and if you have a flat torque curve, you're gonna put some nice power down to the pavement.

the 347 240z is running just above 5 lbs of boost.....I think f he ran any higher, he'd need to tub the Z and run some fat slicks....popping wheelies.

he got the 9.8 running the BFgoodrich 245/50 16 tires. One thing is for sure, the faster you go, the limitations of chassis design sure do stick out like a sore thumb....tubular subframe bars are in the works to keep the body from flexing too much.

He is thinking about doing a semi cylindrical type frame rail that hoks up to the originals and extends all the way back to some custom built torque boxes for rigidity.

Trailing bars and pinion angle supports will also be in the works.

The motor is a crate motor from Bill Mitchell and is a 427 SBC. I changed the heads and added a nice rollercam, but besides that the motor runs on pump gas and can be driven every day. As for the car, well, it is a full round tube chassie from the firewall back. Fab 9 rear and a four link with coil over shocks. The car still rides nice though. Up until I limited the front end travel the car did big wheel stands. now the car leaves harder and it only pulls the wheels up 6". Right now the car is getting a little make over in the name of safety. Additions have included an ultra bell for the transmission and a chute. Also it is getting all new exhaust including new stepped 2" headers and 4" spintech oval exhaust.

The car sounds phenomenal, but doesn't sound like much of a Z anymore.

You have a Z body and a collection of Z parts hanging around, but it sounds like you have a custom drag car that happens to remain street legal.

This is totally an opinion thing, but without a Z motor, tranny, suspension, or frame you would have a tough time claiming a Z pedigree.

Sounds like big fun and lost of suprises for anybody that thinks they will give you a run on the street.

Faster240Z---I'm in Largo and my girlfriend and I just bought a 240Z a couple months ago with a streetable drag car in mind. It has a rusted out floor and the frame rails are falling apart, so I want to do a tube frame.

I have an Olds 455 that I plan to build for the car. I'm shooting for 500HP and another 200 or so in N2O. I've usually stuck with SBC's, but after reading a writeup about a budget buildup of the Olds BB, I couldn't resist. I also have 2 Mazda RX7's that have V8 swap kits but don't have the conversions done yet, so I may use the Olds in one of them and go with a Chevy in the Z.

I'd love to see your car and go for a ride in it... maybe go to the track when you're running, too. I'd also love to pick your brain and maybe get some good sources for affordable chassis work or preferably someone who does it as a hobby and would be willing to "tudor" me and work alongside me to show me how to do it myself. I feel better doing things myself than just paying someone else to do it and leaving it with them, but in this case I know nothing about tube frames.
