Hi Steve,

Ah - the rules over there are different to over here then. Sounds like its a bit fairer over there.

Competitors over here seem to suffer from a lot of anti-Japanese bias. The Escorts and Porsches have it a lot better as far as I can see.

Alan,

It all comes down to whether you want to be HRC [Historic Rally] or PRC [Production Rally Car] or now to completely confuse you Historic Racing is different again.

Thats why you can rally a zed with triple's, Hollinger Gearbox etc etc and be legal [PRC] on the other hand you could well expect a protest at a Historic Race meeting given the same car.

I'm glad you replied Mike, cause I didn't know the answer :ermm:

However, I'd expect the outcome of said protest could be dependant on what ratios you have inside the box. If they are as-per Option 'x' then your only 'advantage' is more power handling, which would't releavnt if the engine was of a certain spec & deemed to be legal.

I'll ask my local CAMS rep & see what he has to say!

From 2003 CAMS MAnual Gearbox casing,gear selector mechanism and the number of forward ratios MUST be original.

Internal componants are free.

Replacing any of those components with an equivilant as close to original is not an option. [in reality it would need a protest and a strip down to find weather it is eligible or not.

In HRC & PRC Cat 1,2& 3 within the HRA there is a Gentlemans agreement about eligibility. As most of us are 50+ and just want to go out for the fun of it [That's why we shun HRC in VRC, love those abbreviations] we don't give a rat's about minor issues, although we are all mindful of protests that have occured in the past, none where ever brought about by a competing crew.

IIRC the C series box is the one which is stronger than the B series. The C box has wider gears, beefier selectors plus a few other detail improvements. The C box came out in the early 80's eg one of my FJ20DET engines came with a B box, the other with a C. I believe that the Australian Skyline's and Pintara's had C boxes as did some/all 280Z's but don't know what their ratios are, it is all a bit of a lottery trying to identify them externally.

Don't know who is making special gears but it is someone other than Hollinger that I heard of. Hollinger would probably know though.

Could you tell me/do you know what 5speed was in the 81 L20E HR30 Coupe? I recently removed one for my 240K, haven't got around to putting it on yet, still need a few more bits and pieces.

I have attached a picture of it, as you can see it has a bent stick, and there's no identification plates on it anywhere (there is on the auto on my 240K) There is also a number stamped into the very top of the bellhousing but it doesn't seem to correlate with any transmissions numbers I've read anywhere else.

Hey Ben, Firstly, thanks for your response.

Secondly, are you sure it wont fit? the designation you just gave me (FS5W71B) is the exact number of the optional 5speed, listed in my 240KGT C110 series Factory Parts Manual.

So I guess, it should fit going by the parts manual which changes my question to.. are you sure that it's that tranny number? I did some basic measuring and it is physicall shorter than the auto, but I also grabbed the front section of driveshaft which from my bush mechanic measurements, seems to make up the difference. Or am I completely off track? :ermm:

I don't know the model number that seperates the stumpy' box from the 'regular' boxes found in the '70's & '80's Nissans. But all wide ratio OD boxes are designated FS5W71B (Floor shift, 5-speed, wide ratio, 71 series, B variant).

The driveshaft in the R30 cars is 2-piece (as you have discovered) with a centre bearing assembly. The 4-cylinder R30's use the 'regular' gearbox, but the 6-cylinders use the 'stumpy' box. If you have ever seen the engine bay layout of a 4-cyl R30, you will notice that the engine is set forward & the gearbox begins about 2/3 of the way into the engine bay.

The stumpy box won't fit into your K, but a Z, C, 810 or 910 5-speed will fit fine. The Z boxes of course could have a 2.9:1 1st or be a FS5C71B (close ratio) box, but it wil still fit (and have better ratios than a C110 FS5W71B).

No, as I said before, there is a C series box as well as the B. If you want additional info on that point to what I have already posted, have a look at the Skyline/Pintara workshop manual.
