Suspension questions for Aussies.

That'd be a good enough reason for me to go urethane. Both inners and out outers came to under $100. If you want (probably not) the urathane pair that I pulled out of my car (which are in perfect condition), they're all yours.

One more quick observation that I never noticed before, are all rear Right and Left control arms the same part, just one upside down?

I never picked up on this before but its definately the case on mine.

There is a dish where the pin for the sway bar mounts, so on the right and left the dish causes one side to be higher than the other, due to one being "upsidedown", does this cause the sway bar to sit on an angle? i cant remember when removing it.

Yeah they're the same thing but flipped on all of them. That caught me out when I was putting mine back together a few weeks ago, as I hadn't noticed when I pulled it appart.

I thought that point where the sway bar mounts looked like it is still in the centre of the control arm. Mind you I didn't look too closely.

Edit: Wrote the wrong bloody thing.

Reviving this again :)

I have the front end out, my plan is this:

Urethan bushes for:

steering rack mounts

steering coupler

radius rods (Noltec catalogue list 2 different IDs 12.8mm and 16mm ??)

OEM rubber bushes for:

pivot joint between arm and crossmember

**will worry about sway bars later**

Also engine mount rubbers are only available from OEM I assume?

ARe adjustable camber bush kits a good way to go? ( does anyone have a picture of this?)

Thanks guys

I'm up to exactly the same stage, where are you looking at getting the bushes from?

I got my rear set from Wilkinson Suspension in Perth. They were 'Noltec' brand and fit really nicely. Not cheap though, it's almost worth getting them from the US, but postage is a killer. If I was doing it again, I would get the whole set together from US.

All Z is good for rubber mounts for engine and have urethane as well but are significantly more expensive.

By 'radius rods' do you mean what some call compression rods?

One more thing, did you re-do Tie rod ends and ball joints? If so, where did you get those?

Thanks

I picked this up when constructing my Tamiya model kit. I was thinking "cheap bastards! these two arms are exactly the same just flipped!" until I did a bit more research ROFL (thanks kats) Clever idea huh?

I used OEM rubber in the rear, from AllZParts, was about 30% cheaper than a Nissan dealer.

I may just get the control arm and engine mounts OEM rubber and get the rest urethane, AllZParts have an adjustable camber bush kit, but I am a bit unsure whether that is the way to go or not.

I beleive radius rods and tension/compression rods are the same thing. MSA have some sort of bush upgrade but I am not sure how it works

I will probably get some WASP brand ball joints from AllZParts while I am ordering, $50ea.

dragging this up again

i have a clunk in the rear of me zed.

there is no play in the diff etc but when i had the rear wheels in the air i could jack the diff up a couple of inches so i think the bushes are shot.

looking at some of the links that have been posted in this thread i found these 'Datsun 240/260Z Diff Mount Moustache Bar bushes - Noltec $44.30'

is this what i need? are there any other bushes i should replace atthe same time?

That is most likely caused by a rubber mount at the front of the Diff. It is quite common for the rubber to tear away from the metal of the mount and cause a "clunk" noise. Examine this area as it's a most likely defective part.
