Gav240z Posted November 20, 2003 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2003 Ok long story short I have bought a stereo system for my Z off a mate which included a headunit(mp3) , 2 6X9's and a subwoofer and amp. Only real dilemna is fitting the subwoofer in as it's pretty big, I'm looking for ideas and designs or pictures of current set ups in peoples cars. My goal is to make it subtle as the Z doesn't have any way of hiding the contents of the boot easily and I don't wanna give thiefs a red flag to come and take my gear . Oh there are a few other limitations i don't wanna drill holes in anything cut any interior pieces up stuff like that. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
santamaus Posted November 20, 2003 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2003 MSA makes a pretty good dual 6x9 box that screws into the plastic rivet holes under the rear hatch. It fits fairly tight and doesn't vibrate. I put my amp under the driver seat--no problems so far. You can run all the wires under the vinyl--and, if you cut back some of the padding, you can still have the vinyl lay flat. Fitting a modern stereo is not so easy (unless someone's found a decent box that mounts in the old head unit's space).As for the subwoofer, I've seen a picture somewhere on this site where someone replaced the spare tire with a subwoofer enclosure, and added some space for spare tools. Although--truth be told, the Z is so small, the pair of 6x9's are plenty loud enough. All they really need to battle is the exhaust note, which is up to you how much you insulate the interior or muffle the exhaust.Good luck!Chris Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have thought about getting rid of the spare tyre but I'm a bit worried if I ever need to get home on a spare somewhere. There really isn't much room. And yes your correct fitting the new stereo through the existing slot will be tight and I don't wanna cut away at the centre heater cluster even a little. Gee Posted November 20, 2003 Share #4 Posted November 20, 2003 If you want a sub-box another CHEAP stealth way is to get a crappy old fruit box - sticky tape up the top and cut the bottom out. When you park the car anywhere dodgy just chuck the box over the top over the sub.. then it just looks like you have a box of junk in the boot.. Brett240 Posted November 20, 2003 Share #5 Posted November 20, 2003 you can make up a box like the mas one pretty easliy with some MDF, a modern stereo will fit through the old stereo slot, a small amount of filing might be needed but it should go in. i dont use the steel outer mounting case in mine.pull the passenger seat out and see if the AMP will fit, other than the firewall on the passenger side therent arent any real good mounting positions. I think your right i was gonna put the amp under the passenger side . For the subwoofer I'm thinking about the spare tyre well more and more . drunkenmaster Posted November 20, 2003 Share #7 Posted November 20, 2003 spare tyre well is the easiest for a large sub.In mine I plane to contour fibreglass enclosures in front of the strut towers/behind the seats, but i will be using 8"s.As for the 6x9's, from a sound quality point of view I would sell them and buy some nice splits. The cabin of the Z is so small rear speakers, especially 6x9's are the last thing you need.If you dont want to cut your door trims, make kick panel enclosures. Zs-ondabrain Posted November 20, 2003 Share #11 Posted November 20, 2003 And as you can see, its virtually invisible when the hatch carpet is in place, and cannot be seen especially at night.The sound is terrific and fills the car w/ beautiful low end sound w/ very little wattage. and there is even enough room left over for my tools and the amplifier is under the tools next to the sub. Zs-ondabrain Posted November 20, 2003 Share #12 Posted November 20, 2003 As for the rear fill, Both Kenwood and Pioneer make slim line speakers that will fit into the stock rear locations easily.they are not deep like regular speakers w/ big magnets, so fitting a 5 1/4" speaker on the same side as the small tank and the hoses that are behind the right rear panel, is actually very easy.all you need to do make a reverse duplicate of the metal speaker bracket that is normally found on the left rear side.
