Tell me about GT2

Zvoiture

Recommended Posts

I found a Z for sale today that the owner says is "prepared for GT2." Looking at it this weekend. Now, I just absorbed EP, CP, BSP, F prepared and ITS and am curious what GT2 would mean applied to a Z. What is GT2? What is the competition?

GT-2 has been pretty much taken over by Toyotas, 944, 924, 300ZX and now 350Z bodied full tube frame cars. Used to be the domain of the Sunbeam Tigers, 240's, 280's, and others.

Read? EXPENSIVE! Many of the newer cars are in the 50K and up to 100K range as far as buying a new one.

All new GT cars must be full tube frame, solid rear axle, fiberglass bodied cars. The only semi-tube frame cars are ones that have been raced for years, so they are "grandfathered" into the class by virtue of being classed in GT before the new prep rules were implemented.

Restricted rules as far as engine prep and types, intake, and all that. More exotic engines than IT or EP, which also means more expense.

A new "regional only" class called SPU and SPO or Super Production could be a good alternative, pretty much anything goes as long as it meets GT class safety standards as far as cage etc...Most regions run it, with differing class structure, some have the U/O limit set at 2 litres, others it's 2.5 litres of displacement.

I've been thinking about SPO if I fix the old IT car, as the Limited Prep EP rules for the Z are kinda restrictive, ie. no 5 speeds, run stock rear diffs(no R-200's), specified brake sizes....

In SPO you could run a 5 speed, R-200 rear diff, any size tires and wheels, triples, any cam, L-28, yadda, yadda, yadda.....all you would need is a full cage built to EP specs, fuel cell, cut off switch, or the same safety equipment you'd need in EP.

BTW, he syas it's "prepped" for GT-2, but before anything, you would need to see if it would be allowed if it doesn't already have a GT class log book. Unless of course it's a full tube frame car.:ermm:

  • 4 weeks later...

Doc, two different cars! You are right and wrong. The "prepped for GT2" car I originally posted for it eventually NEVER even looked at. The guy (local) never called me back with a price or meeting time or stats or anything. That was in late November. Switch to today: Yes, the car in my avitar is Dennis'. It became available recently. I have no reason but to believe I am buying it next week. It, also, is a GT2 'tub-frame', a style I am guessing is legal in Vintage and 'loose' sanctioning bodies and grandfathered in in the stricter ones. This particular car is indeed not without a storied history of successful hillclimbs and road racing and perhaps even rally. Seems alot of it was back East? Watkins and the lot? What part is yours?

My Datsun has a few rear ends (quiafe) from that car, and a bunch of little things. I have some fiberglass body parts that I have not used yet too. I was bothered when Dennis parted that car out. Dennis is one of the best in set up knowledge for a GT car. I need to get a call into him.

I have not been active on this board much. I think you know Royce (Miller) too. Do you have his username? I have "parts" of his too, and ran with him in Vintage SCCA.

Oh! Aanand! Of course. I never even noticed your signature. We met and talked for a bit at Laguna Seca when several Datsun clubs came up (October?). Mine was the green one with white stripes. Beautiful car. Yes, I met Royce (finally) that afternoon as I was leaving.

OK Steve, I think I know too. Somewhere I have some nice pics of your car, mine and Gary Danner's together. So are you racing now too? Planning to?

My plan is to run the whol NorPac Vintage SCCA Series and some ITE/Super Prod. The latter will be just for seat time. My car will not be competitive with the fastest.

I did do well in Vintage Small Bore Three. You should join me and Royce!!

I've been hanging out with another Z racer at Willow Springs and it looks like SO MUCH FUN!!! That and we lost our autocross site here recently, so I have to go SOMEWHERE! Somewhere between my three Z's, I am going to find something to race with. Dennis' car looked like a bit of a headstart. I have everything it needs.
