Posted November 24, 200321 yr comment_58139 I pulled the carbs off my '70 Z and am having trouble getting the screws loose on the suction chamber. Do you have any good tips and tricks for getting them off? November 24, 200321 yr comment_58142 Impact driver, or a small set of vice gips... You can replace them if you mess up the heads with screws from the hardware store.. I believe they are number 10 screws. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/9019-taking-screws-off-suction-chamber/#findComment-58142 Share on other sites

November 24, 200321 yr comment_58154 Send a PM to Kmack, he found stainless allen head screws that fit.. he could tell you what exact size you'd need to replace them.... You could probably pick them up at most hardware stores, ot Home Depot/Lowe's..... November 26, 200321 yr comment_58452 If you don't have an impact driver, use the "poor man's version" like I did: I put a #2 philips head in the stuck screw and tapped with a hammer. Don't go crazy as you might distort the housing. I think some of the problem comes from dissimilar metals having been together under pressure and temperature for a long time. That makes them want to stick to each other. The tapping helps break them loose. It's worked for me so far on 3 out of 4 carbs I've dissassembled. (The 4th didn't have any problems removing them.) November 26, 200321 yr comment_58490 Daniel's method has been mine too for the quite some time. through roadsters 510's z's, well, let's just say a "S" load of SU's. Now, just about every phillip's head screw I remove gets a couple taps for good luck. Of course, this is from a guy that a ball pean and a torch are his favorite tools. November 26, 200321 yr comment_58492 i had the same issue , i switched from the phillips to a regular screw drive and had someone hold the carbs as I leaned into it to put pressure on it and they came out ok , but even the z therapy video says use a regular screwdriver , good luck:geek: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/9019-taking-screws-off-suction-chamber/#findComment-58492 Share on other sites
January 21, 200421 yr comment_65196 Yes, what seerex said....The oem screws can be loosened with a phillips or a standard....use a standard to break em loose, works much better than a phillips. January 21, 200421 yr Author comment_65205 Yup, I got them off with a regular screwdriver. Cleaned them up real good, put them back on and now the car doesn't start. It tries to start and backfires. I haven't bothered with it since before Christmas but will get back to it in the next couple of weeks. January 22, 200421 yr comment_65247 well, the float bowls will have to get full of fuel, and also make sure the pistons go up and down smoothly by hand....that's really all there is to it....might take a few cranks to get the fuel level up so it'll start, might try starter fluid too....
