Posted November 25, 200321 yr comment_58385 I have always heard that draining water spins in the opposite direction from the way it does in the northern hemisphere. Is there any truth to this?!! I have never been in the southern half and am curious. My Fluids professor mentioned it. I dont understand the reason why... but I will. If they've never been to the northern hemisphere they'd have the same problem as you.http://www.snopes.com/science/coriolis.htm Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/9053-dumb-q-for-you-aussie-guys/#findComment-58393 Share on other sites

November 25, 200321 yr comment_58416 Our water spins the right way, which is opposite to your way! It's called the corriollis effect [spelling might be wrong].Water will drain straight down at the equator then slowly starts spinning in opposite directions as you move towards the poles. December 3, 200321 yr comment_59306 thats interesting because my fluids lecturer said that they did tests with tanks that they made sit for a year, and it was entirely random. If the tanks aren't sitting still for a while, there could still be vibrations and waves that cause the water to go a certain way. Then he tried to prove it to us by showing that the effect of the corriolas effect wouldn't do anything to the water. But im stupid and forgot what to do so I can't back that up, but I can say my lecturer was a very cool dude because he had long hair. I'm not sure if that helps at all though...
