Jeff if your seriously that disappointed with the L-Engine could you at least do yourself a favour and try a set of side draft carbs first.

I know you like the idea of a V8 and the whole downdraft carb business but you owe it to yourself to get a decent set of early SU's(Hitachi ones). Slap them back on get it professionally tuned at a Dyno(Rolling Road) and then make up your mind.

:classic:

Its just a suggestion anyway.

The guy that runs in the 12s is named Norm and he lives in Seattle Washington. I believe he drives the car on the street as well as the strip. He frequents , or at least he use to , 240z.com . I agree that the SUs with SM needles for a 280 block is the way to go. Sorry injection people, I think injection is great dont get me wrong . I have a family car and my truck are both injected and are great. I cannot work on either of them. When a sensor goes bad in it goes to the shop. With my 240 I can do everything . It is simple and it performs well with SUs , tuned with a electronic ignition and sm needels. I think that 2manyzs hit the nail on the head about the 4-barrel on an inline engine . :classic:

I have to interject something here, first off I don't like the look of the az Z intake at all, it looks like it is allways going to lean out the front and rear cyls and it could have been designed much better. But I don't think that is the main issue. If his motor is smoking he may have bad rings or a valvetrain issue and he needs to get that straightened out before worrying too much about his carb situation. even with that Az Z manifold he should be doing better then that. He needs to get a leakdown test on that engine lonnnng before putting $1700 worth of tripple anything on it. Just my 2 cents.

Beandip,

I have to disagree with you. With a non-FI car you have to know and understand carbs and fuel mixtures and be able to read plugs and............ On the otherhand a FI car will tell you whats wrong. Pop on the reader (which most parts stores do for free) or on the older chevys you short 2 pins together with a paper clip, or the chryslers you turn the key 3 times and Voila, cooling temp sensor. You replace the sensor and BLAM... all good and away you go.

IMHO

my two cents

Nate

You are right his name is Norm but he lives in one of the Carolinas, not Washington. I should know I visited him on the way home from a trip to get a Z in Florida. His car is crazy fast and its all on junkyard parts that he worked and did hiself.

V-8s well eh, they are ok, if you like an engine that needs rebuilt every 100k or less, bleeds, ie chevy V-8's. I dont sweat V-8's to much, least not ones on the street.

There are some good V-8s you could get but if your looking for break neck speed out of your L6, then get a turbo, you will enjoy.

If you wish to contact Norm the 12 sec dual su dude here is his email, 240zREMOVETHISrunner@charter.net. He is always happy to help a fellow Z memeber.

Go for a RB series engine instead!

Because in the states, we have a kit designed to swap a smallblock 350 into a 240z. $300 for the kit, $150 for a camaro radiator, $100 for motor mounts, $250 for custom drive shaft, and about $2000 for a carbed sbc 350 w/ a world class t5, throw in another $200 for clutch. Oh, and $100 for an electric fuel pump. What's the RB swap cost? (please include cost of mounts, oilpan with rear pickup instead of front, IC, engine management system, etc)

So, that's 3100 for a complete swap to a 350. Of course, a 350 can be had even cheaper than that, 2k was just a gross estimate with a good carb. I know someone who got a 275hp rated LT1 with a t56 tranny with ecu and harness for 1400 bucks at the wrecker, just had to pull it himself.

Oh, and we don't get rb motors as easily as you do in australia :)

The good news is that with the holly carb, installing a plate nitrus system underneith would probably only take a couple of hours....

And while it's not popular on this site, there is nothing wrong with the Chevy V8. Turns dinousaur juice into acceleration as well as anything else.
