The offset oil filter mount can be retro fitted to any engine. The N42 head is definately L28E. It sounds like you have an L24E with an L28E head fitted. No big deal, possibly done when someone cooked the L24 head :/

Are there any thermal tell-tales stuck to any of the heads welsch plugs?

FWIW Rob Ward is a close friend of mine, his LPG 2.7L R30 Turbo is producing 170kW at the wheels - with a leaking head gasket & NO ignition control (locked dizzy). This summer we're going to fit a Haltech E6A to it for ignition purposes only & try to produce the same power at lower boost & get more economy out of the powerplant. He's also got an external gate & bigger turbo to fit. The current wastegate is permanently open & it will still boost to 20psi....

Here's a photo of the car that I took at last years SESM show at Mt. Gambier: http://www.versadev.com/ben/sesm%202002/DSC00639.JPG

stevegee,

sounds like you have the basic L24E Aussie Skyline engine sold in Aus from 80/81-85 when ADR polution control took them out of Skylines. I am agreeing with Ben on the head, sounds like someone either cooked the original or was after a big valve upgrade to the L24E it should have an E88 late series injection small valve head (standard) with a cam profile (248/248).

For interest sake what is the serial number of the L24 block, 240Z blocks finish at about L24-188200. I expect a number a lot higher in sequence. The L24E should of had a " Middle Sump"( normal Z possy is Rear Sump), that was probably changed out when it was installed in the 280ZX.

What you have is an engine combo that will definately please if you drive the rev range and keep it on power. the L24E breathing well does hummmmm.

L24E's are fitted to Skylines, oil brackets are interchangebale. No one yet has told me what model had an oil cooler. I checked a Skyline in a wreckers, NO OIL COOLER OUTLETS on that L24E and the 240Z had no oil cooler outlets, so Q is did the Skyline GT have an oil cooler outlet? Anyone got a manual on the L24E engine possibly can assist??

The GTX hard top with L28s has a water cooled oil cooler and offset filter attachment it came in either hard top or sedan in manual only with an R200 diff. and as far as I am aware is not listed for L24E,(looks like another retro Fitt).

Cheers
