cant get timing right--please help

could you guys please help. iv'e lined up the timing marks and installed the dist at tdc. it sparks and times properly. the only way to get it to run is to turn the dist 1/4 turn--and then it runs cruddy. when at tdc and aligned the points are completely closed because it is on the flat part of the dist rotor-am i missing something other than sleep. thanks .steve:ermm: :ermm: :ermm: sawilliamsmontreal@hotmail.com

Sounds to me like the distributor drive is out of time with the crank... I'd be willing to bet you have recently had the oil pump off? That's the only way the points would be closed if the engine is at TDC on the timing mark.

Make sure the Oil pump / Distributor driveshaft is looking like the one in the attachment.

Don't ask how I know to check!

You need to go through a process of elimination. What did you do before doing the timing. Have you removed the dizzy as can install it 180 degrees out.

Check that both inlet and exhaust are free on cylinder one when you have TDC mark. The rotor button should be pointing at around 7 o'clock which is where No1 HT lead is.

Are the points making contact with the dizzy shaft?

I have installed it 180 degrees out and have watched a mechanic do the same.

The difference is that the bolts are much tighter when bolting the dizzy in as the tang whilst offset will engage.

I thought it wouldn't go weither but it does
