2ManyZs, I wasn't answering your post. I was just pointing out that the first 6cyl DOHC Nissan engine available for sale to the general public was the S20.

carguyinok's first post didn't ask specifically about the USA, and as ANYTHING can turn up ANYWHERE these days I thought it worth pointing out that the S20 was produced from 1968 and was even available fitted to a Z.

Do you think there actually are any S20 engines in the USA? I've not heard of even ONE outside Japan apart from mine, and you would think that it would be the kind of thing that gets noticed and / or talked about. Has anybody ever seen or heard of one over there or anywhere else?

There are lots of apocryphal stories and urban legends out there. I've had quite a few wild goose chases that turned up nothing. Some people over here were even mistaking 4cyl FJ20 engines for the S20 and LY:stupid:

carguyinok, do you think the guy was spinning you a yarn about it being his Grandmother's car? It might be that he knew EXACTLY what it was, but was being a bit coy about it. Possibly a case of him playing his cards close to his chest and not letting on about his "Q Car"? :classic:

Hi Ben,

Yes that's correct - the LY was never actually offered already fitted to any prooduction car from the Factory.

It was used on some of the 'Works' rally and circuit race cars, and in order to homologate these parts and use them legally they were obliged to offer them to Johji Public through their SPORTS OPTION parts lists in Japan.

There are still a few knocking around in Japan, and there are two running LY's here in the UK that I know of.

Alan - Thanks, that's what I thought.

I get people telling me that my Skyline's a 6-cylinder every day of the week. They claim to know about the marque, but have never heard of a 4-cylinder Skyline.

Oh, and on the brake pedal topic - my Skyline has no markings on either pedal....

Gav - Primarily because it's a 6-cylinder engine in 4-cylinder engine bay & things are very tight. Ever tried to work on a RNN14 GTi-R? Well they have HEAPS of room compared to an 'RB' S13/14!

Well Alan, you know how we are about forgetting about the S-20, so I thought I'd make my statement a little more clear....It's hard to remember things that are as rare as an honest politician.....:cross-eye

As far as there being any S-20's in the US? There's at least one that I've heard about. In one of the old issues of Z Car magazine (Spring 97) there's a short article by Wick Humble and Steve Petterson(who at one time lived in Japan and drove 4 different cars with S-20's, GT-R's and 432's) about the S-20, and a picture of Steve holding the head of an S-20.... The last paragraph of the article states, that he "brought back" a complete S-20 engine for his Fairlady Z project car. There was supposed to be a follow up article when the car was completed, but, I don't think that article ever made it before the magazine went under...

I'd imagine there could be one or two more in the US, in the hands of the serious collectors with the means and the contacts to get them...Perhaps someone like Bob Sharp, Don Devendorf, Les Cannaday or perhaps even Carl Beck might have one (or parts of one) stashed away somewhere....and if they did, would they tell people they did?:ermm:

No, I am not the type to judge a person. But you know how after just a few you can tell if there just :stupid: Well this kid was dumb :finger: If he was acting he should be a movie star ROFL

This car was late 80's - early 90's. If it did get a motor swap it was done at least 7-8 years ago. You could tell it had many years sitting in that car. So that would mean he did it when he was like 10 or 11 years old ROFL

Now the way this is looking I need to do some BIG TIME homework on finding where this car is sitting.

The thing that get me is it looked 110% stock and showing its age all around. Yet it couldnt be a import because it was lefthand drive. If it was a import wouldnt it be righthand drive?

Another thought I have had is his grandfather may have done the swap back when the car was near new.

One way or another I know I need to find it .
