idle speed not resting

Tuned the carbs the Ztherapy way on my 73 with 72 SU's.

I passed emmisions on my first try after failing miserably.

The lesson I learned is never get into the habit of leaving your chokes pulled after moving the car from one side of the garage to the other. the gas drips down the nozzle and prevents the the choke from disengaging fully.

ANYWAY, I notice that my idle runs high. around 1500.

If I take my foot and pull up on the gas it goes to about 1000.

And if I shut off the car and restart it goes to about 850 (what I want).

How do I take up the slop?

... and clean up and lube all the moving joints with a light lithium grease.

You can try increasing spring tensions as well although this can, in some cases, pull a bind into things if you're fighting wear. I have seen worn throttle shaft bushings that actually bound up with a heavier spring attached. Leaking shafts and bushings can induce higher idle as well which can lower after restarting the engine because the shaft was able to reposition altering the air leakage....

Dave is correct clean is best. That said,let the car idle and press and play with the linkage parts to try and find the problem. Press on each carb return. It may be one weak spring. It's easy to tighten them .Just remove one end and turn it a couple of revolutions and replace it(without it unwinding). That's where I would start first. Did you clean the carb tops so the carbon/residue would not make them hang?
