SURE KNOW HOW TO PUT ON A SHOW.

I just spent the last couple of hours watching the Tournament of the Roses parade celebrating the new year in Pasadena.

FAAANTASTIC, AAAWWWESOME, TEEERIFIC. :love:

The WORK that went into the floats, the outfits worn by the riders AND their horses, the High School marching bands------

It would be worth the trip over just to participate.

I can't help it, for me it's about as interesting as watching Flies reproduce. All of that time, money and effort put into something that simply disappears the next day. Seems to me that the effort, and dollars could be put into something that is more lasting an actually benefits people.

Rick, I live about 3 miles away from the parade route ..... Never go.

#1 We're talking about a HUGE crowd. People vie for seats by camping out a day before hand.

#2 It's better viewing on the telly. face it, the best seat IS your favorite easy chair near the fridge and your own private privy.

Com' on Carl the floats last a whole3-4 days. Victor only one day. I remeber people being out there 1 to 2 weeks before. In the freaken cold and rain. Rick it looks real nice, and it is. IF you like the freezing cold, wet, damp cement and a billion others pushing & talking all around you. By the way for 2 days after the parade they display the floats at a near by park. :devious: .

Rick likes it so much coz in Australia, we dont have a spontainious event for these kind of things and the floats people do make are pretty shitty... and if we do make one out of indovidual flowers it would just wilt after 1 hour in the sun. + in Australia(WA) only parents and their kids go... :stupid:

About the only BIG parade we have down here is ANZAC DAY Parades.

Sure, the big cities waste millions on fireworks displays on New Years Eve (I'm agreeing with you Carl ), and a lot of country towns like Rockhampton (45 kms away) have Xmas parades but we have absolutely nothing--NOTHING on the scale of the Tournament of the Roses.

Further, I think it's safe to say that we would not have a high school band to compare with those in the parade.

My better half must be part of a minority.

Way back in antiquity I bought her a single red rose on our anniversary. She thanked me very nicely but made it QUITE clear that she prefers flowers to be left on the bush as they last and provide pleasure for a longer time. :ermm:

I'm going to presume that the original comment was indeed sincere and heartfelt, since that was the way I read it.

So, upfront I'll apologize to Carl and Victor, but without mincing words:

Again, sorry if this upsets you, but having declared yourselves bored and hard to please couch potatoes, must you really belittle one of the events that the WORLD considers beautiful and spectacular enough to see to BROADCAST IT WORLDWIDE??

I don't wish to start a flame war, but there are always events in one's own city, county, region, state that we choose to ignore because of the "tourism" angle, or because of the crowds or whatever..... However we need to recognize that there are many people out there who spend a lot of time, effort and money to put together these spectacles.

That they choose to do so, is their choice.

Would you believe that there is another group of people out there who choose to expend a lot of time, effort and money to restore Z cars . They get together in groups on occassion to gawk at, compare and compete with their passion and would have the rest of the world take notice and respect their endeavours.
