I heard a rumour recently: The mid-80's Maxima has the same rear hub and everything as the 1st gen Z and also rear disks. The obvious point of this rambling is there is a rear disk brake bracket that bolts onto the rear hub. Can anyone confirm this and if it is true:

A. What disks are used? What is the 'offset'? Is it the ZX rear disk? Maxima only disk? 240SX disk?

B. What caliper is used. What is the Wilwood equivalent?

Hey Steve I also read some where that there is a way to use Maxima something or other, don't remeber where or if it was with Nissan OEM parts. From recent memory there was the 280ZX conversion that I guess people are custom doing themselves. The Arizona Z Car race kits. The Modern MotorSports LTD 240 SX kit. Which uses a custom bracket & E-Brake adapter. This kit also requires you to flip L to R E-brake cables to get the proper reach. And the very vauge Maxima set up. Also I think there was an early Z31 conversion (4bolt Z31's up to 8'84/'85). Which is also rumor. The 240SX is the one I will do. If I ever get the damn 15/16 M/C or brake system to work right first!

Yeah, I am aware of the AZ and MM models, also Tom Holt has a drawing (a machine-shop ready document) of a bracket that uses a very reasonable Wilwood caliper. It is on his FP-Z site. Does anyone know offhand which Wilwood matches the ZX caliper? Should be easy enough to find in the catalogue, though. The single piston Wilwoods are very reasonable.

If I remember right, the Maxima brackets require you to remove the wheel hub because the bracket goes all the way around the hub, and use all 4 bolts. Machined versions of the bracket only use 3 bolts, so you can put it on without pulling out the hub.

I am installing the rear brakes using the 82-84 maxima brackets, 93 240sx Calipers and 84 (US) rear rotors.

You have to pull the hubs to use the Maxima Brackets. Two different Brackets, 80-81 and 82-84 (from memory). Also, most of the brackets are welded & bolted on. I suppose you could cut the weld and use the brackets, but a lot of work. I found three 82-84 cars and all were welded, other have had better luck. The brackets sell for approximately $100.00 a pair if you can find them at a dealer. They are in very short supply.

I have heard a lot of bad press on the use of the 81-83 ZX calipers. Harder to connect the emergency cables and poor longevity/hard to rebuild/costly.

The 240SX calipers are generally more functional and cheaper. You must get the caliper brackets with the caliper, not provided when purchasing rebuilt from Autozone or Advance. Note: the rear brake line use a banjo fitting, different from the Z with the tubing to hose.

Modern Motorsports has the 240SX package.

I am also installing the 4Runner Fron Calipers with the '84 300ZX Rotors and spacer on the front.

For $400 your getting the Brembo rotors, Brackets, Dot SS lines, Hardware, ebrake adapters and hardware. Not bad Since this is the kit that would install the easiest. All bolt on parts, except for the hose hangers if I remeber right. The 240SX calipers out of the bone yard should still be in good order. ecp48 is correct, when snacthing the calipers from the breakers you have to get the hangers too. Since this looks like the hot(quick and smooth) set up I might start collecting these calipers from the better yards or real good breaker lots? :devious:

There are similar articles all over the place. (carcreations. zdriver, HybridZ, HERE). I mist have anout 10 web pages saved with the different ones. I think that some are out of date, or are aimed at a certain goal. We need to pin down the different types of conversions and get everybody to update their sites with the same info:

• toyota 4 pots with stock solid rotor
  
• toyota 4 pots with vented rotor
  
• ZX 2 pot calipers with strock/vented rotor
  

And that's just the FRONTS! How many guys or companies are making stuff for the rear conversions???

Maybe just an article listing the different choices, and then you decide? With so many different ways, it's difficult for someone to choose one, or the one that's best for his goal/wallet/car.

That's how I feel reight now. Should I collect the (fronts) parts over the winter to do the conversion in spring, or should I hold out until both the fronts need replacing, and which caliper/rotor type should I go for?

That sounds like a good idea. Someone could collect opinions and additions to one type of succesful conversion, then edit a little and put it into a nice tech article.

Either post it here or send it around to the different places and ask them to post it along with their work.
