Posted January 24, 200421 yr comment_65677 I have a 2/1982 280zx. I'm not getting any power to the power windows. I have a Haynes manual and it shows a relay/fuse over by the fuse box in the passenger kick panel. And I can not seem to find it. All the fuse in the fuse box are good and power is passing through all of them. Does anyone have any suggestions or knows how to fix it I would greatly appriciate any advice I can find. January 25, 200421 yr comment_65708 As with most electrical units your best friend will be a volt meter or a test light. You say your getting power at the fuse box. Start there and trace the wire to connectors or relays then to the switch and then to the motor. Test the wire for power wherever you can. Good luck. January 25, 200421 yr Author comment_65718 I have used a test light in a lot of spots and still have not found any power for the windows. What i was saying is that my repair manual shows a relay but i can not seem to find it. Evidently none of the fuses in the fuse box works the power windows. I am trying to figure out is where the relay is and how I can identify it. January 25, 200421 yr comment_65720 the hanes books are helpful but not great , some of them in the back have a the wiring diagram like you looked at , I would start looking for the wiring color codes , should narrow down the search quickly as well as trace the wires where they come in from the window units in the doors there should be a boot that covers them in the jam , follow from there, sorry could be more helpful Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/9881-zx-power-windows/#findComment-65720 Share on other sites
January 25, 200421 yr Author comment_65724 I have traced rhe wires out of the doors and across the dash but still haven't found any relay or module. Thank you everyone for your thoughts. January 25, 200421 yr comment_65804 Ya when it comes to electrical issues, Haynes can be less than illuminating. I have an '83 ZX, but don't tell anyone, 'cuz around here they think they are a POS . 1/ Have you ensured that you have power TO the switches? 2/ Have you pulled off the door panels to inspect the wiring harnesses and motors? 3/ Have you tried running the motors directly off the battery to ensure they are working? Assuming that both windows stopped working at the same time, and you have power going to the switches, and the motors/wiring looks o.k. and the motors work off the battey then the likely culprit is the circuit breaker. Page 245 of Haynes shows a circuit breaker right next to the passenger power switch (top of page, in middle), with YR and WL wires attached. This is to protect the motors and switches from power overloads. Could either just be burnt out from 22 years of faithful service, or there could be a short somewhere that 's tripping it. This circuit breaker should be located under the dash near the fuse box on the passenger side. Haynes doesn't show it and I'd go look for myself, but it's -25 in the garage, (-30 outside with windchill), so unless you want to wait til spring you're on your own :classic: Good luck, cheers, Peter Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/9881-zx-power-windows/#findComment-65804 Share on other sites
January 26, 200421 yr Author comment_65980 Thanx Peter for the advice. I have pulled the door panels off and checked all the wires in there and i have tracked the wires into the dash with no luck. All the wires have no power coming out of them. I have looked for the breaker and have not been able to locate it yet.I haven't tryed hooking the motors up to a bettery yet. I just got this 82 280zx about 5 months ago and I have already replaced struts, shocks, ball joints, steering rack, outer tie rods, brake lines, clutch master and slave, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, blower motor fuse(and now all i have is cold air blowing through my vents but thats another project) and of coarse i had to drop the fuel tank and cleaned it out and blew out my fuel lines. The next thing I have to do is replace the clutch. Then I can start driving it.I also have a 81 280zx and a 80 280zx car i have parted out. The 81 I plan on gutting out and turning it into a race car toy. Once agian thank you for your thoughts.
