260z restoration

hi!

I'm new to this forum. I own 2 1975 datsun 260z one registered and the other not. What i was wondering was dose anyone out their know of any restoration places? What i was thinking was ALL rust removed bear metal re-spray, new interior and either get the origional engine and gearbox etc reconditioned or go for a RB20DET conversion. Any advice on all the above would be helpful.

PS. I'm based in perth western australia

i would also like to get an idea of how many other 240's and 260's are driving arond in perth and other states? thanks your help and advise will be muchly appreciated.

hi 260freak,

I hope you have a fat wallet for the type of restoration you are talking about, the sad reality is that you would be financially better off buying an already restored 260. I don't know what a bare metal restoration would cost but I wouldn't expect much change from $20,000 to pay somebody to do all of the work.

The beauty of these cars is that they are not particularly difficult to work on and there is a wealth of information available through sites like this one.

My advice is tackle the job yourself or buy a finished project.

For info I recently saw a 2 seat 260 for sale in Tasmania for $10,000 with an RB20 in it.

Im in the middle of doing a bare metal resto and while it is time consuming and expensive, its the only way you know the job is done right. Especially with a more powerful engine swap, i needed the peice of mind that a concealed rusted frame rail wasnt going to snap around a 100kmh bend.

I too looked at buying someone elses restoration but I have only seen a couple for sale in the last few years i would call anything close to a restoration, yet there are many advertised as them.

I'm in perth too. I'm at the beginning of my 240z resto. Its taking a long time as i'm doing all the work myself, because i want it done properly ( and i'm cheap).

WA Z car register (www.wazcars.com) had thier first meeting last sunday (25/1/) at rosies in south perth. Visit the site and send Vauhan an email and he will add you to the email list, so that you get notified of up coming events. We have a Z day once a year. I still have pics of the 2003 zed day at http://vianet.net.au/~craig/car-pics/ Definately have a look at the photos.

I'll be upgradign the website soon, if i get any free time between working and fixing my Z up.

Hmmm, sunday? sunday? That would be BBQ no.2 for the weekend starting at 1pm and involving copious quantities of prawns, squid and Little Creatures Pale Ale! Alas, I'll have to wait for the Feb meeting to put in an appearance...should have my new radiator in by then too...

Its up for sale if anyone in perth (or Australia) is interested.

Other than that, there were 2 260z's that were there last time you were there. Includings Ken's immaculate fully restored 260z 2+2.

Welcome to the site, I think you should be able get answers to any questions you may have, everyone here is always very helpfull. To your resto sounds like you have set yourself a good taskand I wish you the best of luck.

Is there any chance you could help me please.

I am after the production data for the 260z's you have, such as the body serial number, the data plate engine number the date of production, certification or first registration of your 260z even the compliance plate data if you have one.

I am in the process of trying to build a register for all the right hand drive export Z's. So I ask the same question to a lot of people. I have about 200 serials in the register so far.

As an idea this is one of my Zed's below;

Hi 260freak.

Another Perth Z owner here. Also a member at www.wazcars.com but they are a relaxed lot. You will get more help here.

As for restoring your Z. I was going to get other people to do mine but it is really expensive and you will compromise to save money unless you have a wad of cash. So I have started doing mine myself. As I see it if I stuff it up it probably wont cost me any extra to have a professional fix my mistakes. Plus it is more fun to do it yourself.

There are plenty of members who are willing to help you. Just read the posts and get a feel for what you need to look out for and give it a go, post a question if you have one, post observations if you find something different.
